I know that you should never try to train a dog without experienced help. i.e. a professional trainer. But when would you stop training your self? Would you stop at using a bite developer? Could you have a friend play with the dog in prey drive using a tug or even a sleeve? I just want to know what tools I should buy, and/or videos to watch before I try some new things with my dog. I would like to work with a trainer, but at 50 dollars a session I want to cut out as many as possible. I'm away from home right now and this is all prep stuff so if there are any good books out there I'd be interested in those too.  My goal in training is to have a dog with good obedience who will engage an intruder.

Thanks

"but at 50 dollars a session I want to cut out as many as possible" Does one see what those words really say? If money is an issue research for a deal. Or a package deal? For obedience, that could be accomplished by you and you alone. When you say never train without experienced help? What type of training. Not knowing exactly what you want from the dog or the dog to learn. But some things are not as complicated as people make them out to be. Nothing negative with or about the woman who trains obedience down at PetSmart but I would not take my dogs to a place like that. Only because I train my own and because I look to my dogs as working tools first then pets. Not saying I love them any less. You can ask anyone who knows me and exgirlfriends, They'll say I care more for my dogs than humans. I'm just more in touch with them than humans. The biggest goal in my mind is to have a great dog, ? I'll try to have the best but honestly who knows? But I want to do it. Yes I'll have some help say with bitework, decoys, practicals and scenarious. But the heart/meat comes from me. I'm not saying I'm the smartest. the best. I'm just saying they're my pack and I want to train them, imprint them, socialize them my way.  I think I know enough or know them enough where I don't need someone til something is out of my grasp or I need a different way to try and obtain a goal. Training is everyday........... little, big, indoors outdoors, in a car, a house,  with someone, by yourself. So many, what's the word I'm looking for? Venues?

With me one of the "wildest" things that I see is my male, Reiker, @ 9  was a lot of training, work and fun. On one hand l take it for granted. Til I see another dog or someone points things out to me about how good he is. But man Sunday mornings, driving to another state, 10 degrees and the humans saying "what the hell are we doing out here?' The dogs loving it and looking at us like we're sissys! Week after week. It's funny because I trained Reiker for Verbal and non-verbal commands. And to see him (of course time) to pretty much know what I'm thinking. And I just have to give a nod for a response. But now Ana is almost there and Bella.............. Still grasping the dutch commands. I would think you would get a nice response with this topic but it might be a little vague. The last line; We could have a dog in the house, no training, and a neighbor or stranger try to enter. I would think most/some dogs would engage the intruder. No training. Just protecting their territory and their master. Just figure obedience wise what you want and if you can do it and work towards that. Good luck.

Leerburg????  Ed Frawley never trained a dog in his life.  Taking videos of other people's training and then selling copies for profit,,,,,,now that's Ed Frawley.
