Anyone have any advice--good or bad--on dog doors.  I want one that installs in the wall, rather than in a door.  I've always had the PetSafe brand with the replacement flap that you can buy at any of the big discount pet supply stores, but I've never been happy with the durability or weather sealing.  I've come across a number of brands such as Plexidor, Endura, and Hale.  Would appreciate any opinions on these or others.

The Ruff Weather with dual flaps that is sold at home depot seems like a good choice.  I plan on installing that one.

The PetSafe line looks flimsy and not very durable for the long haul.

I came across one the other day when i was working in these peoples hous, and it was in the wall dont know who made it but it was amazing, Each dog had a collar that opened it, when the dog got close to it with the collar it automatically opened it was super nice and as far as sealing and keeping air and things out it did a great job..
What ever company made it had a great idea.

I have a dog door that installs into the screen.  So, on rainy, muddy days, I just keep the glass slider closed.  No dirty dog coming in the house.

Also, it is good security.  At night, the glass door is closed.

I looked at the Plexidor and really like how it looks and operates, but sheesh..$500 or $700 for the Large or X-Large.  That seems insane for a dog door.  I came across this site which offers something very simple at what appears to be a very reasonable price.  I'm putting this in a wall I'm building, so not sure why I would pay for the premium door.

We got the Ruff Weather 1 with dual flaps at Home Depot in 2009 for our puppy room and it is Awesome!!! We had it installed through our wall. We've had are rescue who is 100 pounds all the way down to 6 pounds go in/out the doggie door with no problems. I think we got the biggest 1 that it came in, extra large?

We have eight dog doors in our kennel.....six are X-Large Pet Safe models.....the flaps wear out, dogs can get at them, chew and pull them off.....have replaced them a few times...also not insulated well enough to keep the cold out!  We also have two Gun dog doors..XL......dogs can't get ahold of the door to chew ...but they are the loudest doors..bang so loud when the dogs go in or out....we can hear them in our upstair's bedroom!  Would "Never" purchase these again.....I'm going to Home Depot and check out the Ruff Weather doors!

Thanks everyone for your suggestion's!  Still looking for that perfect door myself!

I'd never use a soft flap door again, no matter how thick the flap.

I also don't advocate doors that go directly into the house. My friend put one in the garage for his chow; a guard dog, so Napoleon could get in out of the weather, but he didn't have to worry about any unwanted critter (or any person) getting into the house via Napoleon's door. Just incase they got past Napoleon ;)

I don't mind the slam of hard doors like the GunDog models, but Turbo speaks the truth: they are -very!- loud.

I've bought dog door several times from these people and they have a large variety and are really good to work with:

For the kennels, I really like the "Gun Dog Easy Pet Door" -- not loud, but not ideal if the wind will be blowing in/out of the kennel doors -- www.petdoors.com/gun-dog-easy-pet-door.html
