  hey,
i have a German Shepard his name is wolf. he is now 14 yrs old and i would love to have a pup off him, he is a pure bread  from black and tan parents however wolf is pure white...
he is well looked after he sleeps in the house at night and he has also free roam of the garden which is about an acre. his meals consist of dry nut, salmon, tuna and good human food when left over.i have also started to give him Vitiman e supplement for the last 2 days.
i have taken him to the vet and he got a sample and said that he couldn't see any sperm..
he hasn't lost his libido tho, as he tries to mount our female German Shepard, ruby, who is 3.

can anyone give me any suggestions or help, as i am now desperate

thankin you so much

I have a suggestion: don't breed your dog.

by jamesfountain98 on 25 January 2011 - 13:01

lol @ keith. Nothing about that description says the dog is breed worthy nor does anything about that description says the owner is knowledgeable enough to determine if the dog is breed worthy.

Heidiho, you would probably do a little better doing some research and buying a puppy from a reputable breeder.

Probably should have thought about breeding/collecting him a little earlier than 14 years old - you had 14 years to think about it - now it's probably too late.  Especially if he hasn't been bred before, his semen at his age is probably "nada".

BUT.  It has been the case more than once, when a male dog that hasn't been bred recently (or at all) is collected for evaluation, and there is nothing there.  No viable sperm.  Because it hasn't been used, he hasn't been collected/bred recently (or at all) and everything "sitting in there" is dead or stale from disuse.  So, collect him again a month or so after that first collection, and look again.  There may be viable sperm that time - because his pipes were cleaned out, and if he is producing semen still at his age, he will have produced some to replace the amount that was collected.   If he's not producing semen at his age, then the collection will once again be "nada".  So collect him again, give it a few weeks after that first time, and have the vet look again.  You never know.

Well-breaded dogs get sizzling with a little EVOO.

I'd wait until he was 17.

Beetree, Can I get a little basil and rosemary in that EVOO? :-) To the OP: Semen can be collected directly from the testicals. But, that is a one-time shot and it involves general anesthesia. Ergo, it is not a good idea for an old dog, as he could die from the anesthesia. I would suggest you look into getting a puppy from similar bloodlines.

Heidi:

Lets look at this for a minute. You love your dog, thats great and he is getting up there and you would love a pup from him before he pass,s on, okay thats fine but lets say Molly is correct you blew out the pipes and low and behold he now is showing some active sperm. Now do you have the female your going to breed pop to? or are you looking at some one else,s female?. Okay Pop has a girl friend that is willing and able BANG the old pup gets his day and your on a litter, How many other people love old pop that you are going to be able to put pup,s in a good homes. Remember after you place these pups (sold or free) you still have a responsibility to them out of sight out of mind doesn't cut it.

Is the creation of a whole litter worth the want of 1 pup? and the responsibility you create for another 14 more years(or so) of the rest of them?.  The pounds and kennels and shelters  are bursting at the seems with pups i,m sure many from " we love our dog so much we want a puppy from him" folks good intentions bad out come.

Find your self a nice pup and raise it to a jolly old age as you have. Unless you are able to give them all a good home with your self at the worst case.

Before you do anything, please at least have the hips and elbows check on the male and your female.
