Dear Dog,

You were supposed to be a working dog. Your pedigree and bloodlines were well established. Your parents' accomplishments impressed me. You were supposed to follow in their pawprints.

Although right now, Dear Dog, I have my doubts, I just want you to know that's okay. You're still part of my pack, and still a loyal friend. Yes, you appear to have the drive of a gym sock, but you're still young. I'd rather give you time to be a pup, than push things too hard.

You're very clever, Dear Dog. I was impressed how quickly you learned to open all the doors around here. I was even more impressed how quickly you realized you weren't supposed to, and now only do so if asked. When my hands are full I greatly appreciate the help.

So maybe protection sports are not in your future. Ultimately, so what? There will always be more dogs in my life. I can't force you to be something you're not. That keen mind and inquisitive nose, maybe you'd be good at SAR or detection. Perhaps we could do some obedience on the side. No one said you can't get your BH and AD certificates. You are young, and we have lots of time.

Dear Dog, I just want you to know whatever you turn out to be, you are still a true and valued friend, and I'm glad to have this oppertunity to know you. I look forward to many good years together.

Sincerely
Your Owner and Friend, J.C.

J.C. Carroll, That was a really awesome letter.... If only more owners would feel that way....It doesn't matter if the dog can read it or not, as long as you tell him, I bet he understands exactly what you are saying....After all He is a GERMAN SHEPHERD !!!

Nona, are you serious? It doesn't matter if he can read it or not? Of course he can't read it.

Thanks Nona ^_^

And I wouldn't put reading beyond him. If that border collie can read cue cards -- "ball," "rope," "sit" -- why couldn't a GSD? *wink*

I hope everyone on this forum reads this letter;  a definite message to all SL/WL and inbetween.  Loved it and amen.  Nan

Well written. My point to my earlier post was that this letter is for yourself and other PEOPLE. If you truly feel this way, your dog already knew before this was written.
