I sold a male puppy when it was 8 weeks old. I kept in touch with the buyer and always told the pup was doing great. For 8 months this puppy was fine. I saw the pup when he was 5 and 7 months old and he looked great and acted fine. When the puppy was about 8 months old the owner called me on a Friday and said the pup was sick and not acting normal. The owner said he was very lethargic, had trouble walkikng, and would not eat. I told the owner to take him to the vet immediately. On the next Monday the owner called again and said the puppy was still not doing well and that the pup was going to the vet at 1:00pm. I asked if had been taken on Friday as I suggested and was informed no. To make a long story short, the puppy finally got to the vet at 3:00pm (owner lives two blocks from the vet). The owner said the puppy had a 108 degree temp. He was placed in ice water at the vets office and the temp came down to 105. As a result passed away. Now the owner is claiming that the puppy died from a heredity or congenital disorder. Just some info. This was in August in the northeast. All the other puppies in this litter (10 others) are fine and doing very well, and will be one old in two days. I have spoken to the vet and have his opinion. No blood work was taken. Now I'd like your opinion.

My opinion is the puppy owner is full of crap. Poor pup. What congenital disorder causes a 108 degree fever?
My advice would be if the owner gives you grief, go directly to the veterinarian and ask his/her opinion, and you've already done that. Of course it could've been heatstroke. Guess it could've been other things, but I'm neither a doctor nor a tech. Poor pup. I'm very sorry.
Hope you share the vet's opinion.

However, it could also have been something toxic that he/she got into and could be 1,000 more things; negligence comes to mind also as they did not run any blood tests (unless they did and are saying they did not) also negligence on the owners part.
Whatever happened, really sorry for the loss, very devastating to lose a puppy that young. so sorry.

We had something like this happen to us a few years back, took our dog to the emergency vet that night and she barely made it. Cause was unknown, bloodwork pointed to toxic or infection. Nothing congentital, to my great relief.
Even with a necropsy it can be difficult in certain cases to pinpoint cause of death. I've been there, too.

I am very sorry for the loss of the puppy but feel that nitwit people such as these shouldn't own animals, period. Could you get something from the vet stating it was not genetic?
CYA with documentation.
