Oh, this is something interesting, should a pregnant female be dewormed and why? isn't deworming a sort of worms killer!! won't it hurt the unborn puppies?
Thanks Tarek for this interesting question.

I worm BEFORE breeding a bitch with Drontal Plus - this product is not indicated for use in pregnant dogs. If I need to worm during pregnancy I use Safeguard which is safe for pregnant dogs.

You should always do it BEFORE pregnancy....I wouldn't do it now,no matter what any vet says..anything you give the bitch, will be assimilated by the fetuses..and EVERYTHING has a side effect, and fetuses are very delicate at this stage.
Good Luck

That is why you should deworm the female while she is pregnant, so the puppies wont have any worms. Because of hormonal change in pregnancy, worms are set free and the puppies will be infected with worms before they are born. The deworming wont harm the puppies!

Hi!
As a matter of fact I've given thought to these recently due to I'm mating one of my bitches.
Of course it's always a good idea to deworm the bitch before mating, but it's also said, it should be done after she has started her heat - at least that's what I've always heard. Also, nothing prevents from doing it before AND after the beginning of the heat.
The products I use here are either usual Drontal (which contains febantel, pyrantel. embom., praziquantel.,)
or something called Axilur, that is sold here and much used especially with pregnant females and their puppies. It contains fenbendazol.
Axilur should be of more broad spectrum than the Drontal but does not kill every form of worms as far as I've understood correctly. If someone knows different, I'd appreciate all information. It is usually well tolerated. It has to be given several days and often repeated if the dog has had actual wormproblem, it's not regarded as a kill-'em-all-at-once but a good, solid and safe product that is very commonly in use. It just has to be used enough and repeatedly.
I favour usually Drontal as it quite efficient, also very well tolerated, handy: I don't have to buy such an amount of packages and large amounts of medicines to get down the dogs' throats, it is also cheaper, it's easy one-dosage and usually no reason to repeated treatments, and effective with the only worms mine are likely to have in normal circumstances.
Milbemax usually is used here for those nose ticks? / mites? that cause reverse sneezing although it is nor favoured as much as those pipettes that are opened and contents will be applied behind the dog's neck and in his back.
I discussed this deworming matter with my own vet's assistant who asked my vet. The opinion was, when I had not used Axilur for a long time (only Drontal) and was actually planning mating my bitch, to give normal 3-day Axilur treatment already before her heat and after the beginning (before mating) that normal one-time dosage of Drontal. We discussed we could take a "sample" to be inspected after that to see if there's some reason for further longer treatmens during later pregnancy.
If there still is reason to give treatment, Axilur for example is used in such cases with normal daily dosages from day 40 of pregnancy onwards till two weeks after the puppies are born. For example, if the bitch has a normal dosage 3 tablets per day for three days, the dosage is 3 tablets each day from 40th day onwards.
Drontal then ..
In my packege information paper it says, as there is not quite sufficient research data concerning the effects of use of Drontal during the time in question, Drontal is not recommended to pregnant bitches in the first two trimesters. It says nothing about using it in the last trimester. About the dosage in later stages and how many times should it then be administered, I must say haven't a clue as of yet, but intend to find out if this is an option and if it is, how it should be done, to compare with Axilur, efficiency, safety.
If you aren't really sure about something, always best to contact and ask your most trusted vet. Maybe there isn't any one true way, there can be several. It's also quite a lot act according to each case and circumstances in which you and your dogs live and what they've come in contact with or not, and in which part of the world you are located etc.
Don't know it this is of any help but hopefully there's a solid and suitable product or two available at your local vets office

I would call the various worming med's manufacturer's and ask what they recommend for their particular product. If they say it is safe for pregnant bitches; ask when it can be given l, 2, or 3 trimester?? Otherwise you are giving the bitch a dose of poison and of course, that is worrisome anytime during pregnancy.
You can weight until pups are born, worm her when they are 2 weeks old and every two weeks thereafter if needed. And are you talking roundworms, or what?

I'd not be so worried myself abot the matter if I had had the dogs only under my own and familys care. Last May we ourselves became seriously ill and hospitalized for a while and due to that, the dogs had to be taken care in a facility that we could not choose ourselves due to our condition. Afterwards it came out, the place was not so nice and the dogs had gotten themselves roundworms. I've never before actually seen such in any of our own grown-up dogs. Time or two in puppies bought and brought home, speedily and seriously taken care of, but in our own grown-up dogs never with our normal care, habits, and 3-4 dewormings per a year. Last summer I did all things according to my vet's advice and probably even overdid the matter little. Have since heard such stories of how resilient those little nasty things are, I really don't know if there's any serious risk of "overdoing" this kind of thing especially if you want to keep your bitch OK and get as wormless puppies as possible, that's something I don't want to risk. It's easy to underevaluate the matter but not easy to repair the effects of puppies possibly being badly infected from early age.

I dont understand why you would "free worm" without doing a fecal to see if the bitch even has worms in the first place. Maybe I missed something but why would you give a pesticide if it isnt even needed to unborn pups?
I had a vet once tell me (and I was dumb enough to believe it) that I could vaccinate a bitch with rabies during a heat that I was planning on breeding her. I paid dearly for that advise since one puppy died and one was malformed. Wont do that again.
