Is your dog a GSD with previously erect ears? If so, this means the ear has been injured and she probably has a serious bruise or hematoma. I just had a dog have this happen, from running through a door that the wind was slamming and nothing you can do will help this. My strong suggestion is to see a vet who may (and I say may because it is not a sure thing either) be able to help. The dog may also have an infection in the ear. Time is important. Be prepared for the ear to never stand again. The dog I have, despite doing all we could, has an ear now that will not ever stand again.

I had a 5 month old male whom I sold recently. When I sold him, only one of his ears was up and the other is not. He is a big pup and also is teething. So I really didnt mind selling him as he was and now the person who bought took him to his vet to get an opinion on the ear and found out that there is infection in the ear which did not stand up.

The dog was very healthy when he was with me all the days and even I got him vet checked and a health certificate before he was sold. But now reading this discussion I am wondering if his ear did not go up because of the infection.

So does the ear get soft because of an infection ?

Thanks

An infection in the ear hurts, just like it would in a human child. The difference is that muscles and connective tissue must be moved to chew and help the dog ear to stand. Sometimes simply having defects in the muscles or connective tissue cause ears to not stand. It is a genetic thing more often than not. But yes, if a dog has an ear that is hurting, it is not going to utilize muscles and connective tissue if it can prevent it and avoid pain.

flash, I had a bad dog fight between my 2 girls, and one of the dogs held onto the other dogs ear and pulled & pulled, I thought for sure it would never stand up again, I couldn't knock her out & have them stitch it up cause she was 7 days pregnant, we had to let mother nature take it's course.
How long ago did this happen, it may still go up on it's own.
Keep it clean.
Her ear took about 3 weeks to come back up.

It ended up standing again, but never went back to looking perfect.

Here's before & after:
