Wondering if anyone has advise on GSD with a partial blockage. I noticed my dog Tadum was not eating or drinking and he had a really think glue like salvia. I took him to the vet who carried out x rays and advised he has something lodged in hid intestine. I was advised it is not anything hard like stick, bone, or rock but thet it is something material like. I can only think of two things that it could be and that is a baby diaper or a stick of raw hide.
My dogs rearly evey eat raw hide and I kind of think this is what it may be causing the blockage. Its been 3 days now since I have been to the vet and he is drinking and eating a little but no where near normal. He did poop 4-5 times in the last few days but its very small and unformed.
I have him on pain medication now and am watching him very closely. If he do not pass whatever is obstructing him in the next while he may have to undergo surgery.
Any advise as to what I should do in this situation, should I give him something to try and make him go (pumpkin) etc....??

Thanks

What did your vet advise? Pumpkin is good for correcting both hard and loose stools, but I am doubtful it will move a blockage. If the blockage still exists your dog's life could be in danger. If it were my dog I'd take him to the vet ASAP and have him x-rayed again to see if the anything has changed. If nothing has changed I would think surgery is required. Others may have a different opinion, but I don't think this is anything you should procrastinate about or take lightly.

I agree with Starrchar. This is potentially life-threatening. What did your vet advise you to do? Did the vet think this will pass out through? If it stays in one place for very long, it will kill tissue and the dog will end up loosing intestine IF surgery can save him.

Rawhides can be serious obstructions. Diapers - don't even have to think about that trouble. What did your vet say to do? That is what you should do. And if the dog is not doing well, not eating, not drinking and not passing much, this is not a good situation.

I suggest that if you are concerned about what is happening now, you need to be talking with your vet and let him/her see the dog again as soon as possible.

Again, this can KILL your dog if this doesn't get out of the intestines soon enough.

Usually with a blockage that has a chance of moving, you should be taking multiple xrays - say every 12 hours, or at least 1 a day. 3 days is a LONG time to wait with a dog at home with a diagnosed obstruction. Go to the vet and get another xray, your dog WILL die if it doesn't come out.

Thanks for the advise, the vet advised to keep a close eye on him, make sure he is drinking lots and monitor him closely to see if it passes. He has not been vomiting and as of late been drinking, he had a partialy formed poop this evening.
But I think you are right about another x- ray to see if it is moving. I hate the thought of having him put through surgery, wonder if he would ever be the same. I hope to avoid it but do not want to wait and cause further complications.  Guess its back to the vet.....

I AGREE WITH KACEY!! I WOULD NEVER LET MY DOG GO THROUGH THIS!!

by Tadum on 21 January 2011 - 04:01

I been to to the vet on day one and day two, today was the only day I was not at the vet .....thank you very much for your blunt direction(KACEY). I asked for advise not a smart comment (KACEY). The vet asdvied me to do what I am doing, I was posting this as a descussion and for helpful advise in the mean time.
I am following this closely with the vet and will make decisions based on her recommendations.
Thanks some of you where helpful and that is what I was looking for on this site, some others should not make responses if they have nonthing good to say and want to make a bad situation worst.

Look at it this way:  Surgery, if it is required, may well save the dog. The dog will do fine and be the same as before IF intestinal damage done is not too severe. If you are doing what the vet told you to do, great. But then why come here and ask us? We cannot see the x-ray and we don't know you or the dog. What if you are right about things seeming to be better in that the dog had a partially formed stool and that this is a sign that the blockage is moving? Great. But the obstruction is not out, and this is a long time for something to be obstructing the intestines. On the other hand, what if you are wrong, are missing the fact that the dog is not doing well at all? Next thing you know it could be too late even for surgery to save the dog, or, if it did save the dog, if the damage might be too great and it still could result in the dog not being well for the rest of its life, or worse, dying.

So the reasonable thing is to get with the vet about this and if you don't trust the vet, get a second opinion by a vet who can see the dog and look at x-rays etc.

Good luck.

Thanks Hoodie. ...... what you are saying makes sense. I just did not want to jump to surgery on my dog. Back to the vet ...................
