Hi, I have a dog that was prelimed, but now I need X-rays that I can send to the OFA.  How long after having a litter of puppies before I can have the X-rays taken?  Thanks!

When pups are weaned she should be all set for her permanent x-rays.
Good luck!

Umm, shouldn't that have been done before you bred her?

vomzellme,

To answer your question.......Most breeders I have talked to about this, have pretty much agreed that waiting till the puppies are 8wks old is a good time.....Leaves no question as to if enough time was given before xrays were done......Hope this helps answer your original question....

Let's not be JUDGE and JURY please.

I would wait at least three months till all her structure has settled and her body is back into its Female schedule.   The hips are affected by  birthing and should wait a few months till you subject her to that . You do not want to waste money on xrays . Just make sure you do get them done way before her next heat cycle.

THe poster stated  the dog  was PRELIMED.   If prelims show good then there may be no reason not to capture the time of breeding before waiting a whole 6 months more.

NOt gonna judge or worry or start a flaming thread.....PRELIMS do not change  if dog is taken same routine with and has no injuries..

MY gosh...people...lets HELP  not point fingers , as three are pointing back at us if we do...

How about we look at the source for the answer rather than make it up as some always seem to do. Of course, if one takes x-rays later than their recommendation, as long as it is not coming too close to the next heat cycle, that would also work.

The OFA states this on their web site:

"Radiography of pregnant or estrus females should be avoided due to possible increased joint laxity (subluxation) from hormonal variations.OFA recommends radiographs be taken one month after weaning pups and one month before or after a heat cycle. Physical inactivity because of illness, weather, or the owner's management practices may also result in some degree of joint laxity. The OFA recommends evaluation when the dog is in good physical condition."

For additional information, read the OFA web site under Hips link.

No one makes up answers, it just opinions that were given.....Perhaps if the original poster would have asked what is the recommendation from OFA  or some other foundation, than the answers would have not been opinions, but direct information copied and pasted from that website....

Well said YR.....

I beg to differ, preliminary X-rays absolutely DO change.  Were the prelims done @ 6 months or 2 weeks before the dog was bred?  I have seen dogs that have had good hips at a young age not pass an OFA at 24 months.  Apparently YR you don't know much about physical growth in dogs and the development of the skeletal structure.  If prelims don't change, why does OFA require radiographs at 24 months and up instead of just accepting puppy films?
