at what age do you tatoo a pup? i have a client who has requested that i tatoo instead of avid chip. the reason he gave me was in some instances the screening at some places are alerted by the chips???

I was told it was safe to do on my un tatooed pup who is now 8 months old and I have heard of it being done to older. I have not done it and wanted it while he was younger but could find no one here in eastern TN to do it.  I prefer tat to chip personally but looks like I will be stuck with a chip.

Tattooing of a litter is done at 7 weeks. We tattoo our own litters if you are not needing litter registration with the USA this is fine. Most will have their local breed wardens tattoo a litter for them. If you are in Wisconsin than good luck. Last litter I needed tattooed by a breed warden, one breed warden was in Germany and the other one never returned my multiple messages. I guess not every one takes the job seriously.

None returned my calls or emails either through TN VA and NC that I contacted.

Its really sad when they require a breed warden to tattoo yet allow less than professional people be breed wardens and leave people helpless to follow the rules.

We started doing our own tattooing because of this. It really isn't difficult if you have two people that are able. The holder is just as important as the one doing the tattooing.

Sorry we are not closer to help.

Puppies are tattooed at 7 weeks. We chip and tattoo. Once they get older you will need to have them put under general anestesia.

We always tatoo our pups at 5 weeks of age, especially if you are doing it in the ear.

With one person holding the head and shoulders and another holding the rear, the person doing the tatooing is able to do the job without much fuss.

If using the clamp method , you must be very careful of the ear cartlidge.

No, it's not true that older dogs need to be put under general anesthesia in order to be tattooed.  My dog was tattooed at 3 years old, by my schutzhund trainer who fortunately has a lot of experience.  We put my dog up on a grooming table, I held the ear while someone else got behind to hold the dog so he couldn't back up,  and Jim quickly clamped the ear tattoo.  One quick YIP and it was all done, and my dog didn't really seem to care.
