Just curious how many of you have had dogs that have had live bites? Did they have "formal" training?  If not can you see your dog getting live bites without training? Why or why not? Tyring to start a topic training related.

Not sure if thiss counts but my gsd has been on the suit and sleeve, but mostly on the suit.  While learning to run blinds she went in for the B&H.  Only this time the helper was wearing a sleeve.  When he raised his are for the bite my dog bite him in the underarm sholder area, the same spot where he was trained whilt being worked on the suit.  Great dog but a bit on the dirty side.  Another time when the helper tapped her with the stick while teaching the B&H she bite him on the hand between the thumb and first finger in that web area.  Teeth went strait through.  The second bite that i speak of was her first live bite,  she knew she was not to bite the person so she let go ,  not the second time though.  Due to the blind I did not see the bite as it happened.  I just heard "Oh S&$%"

Although these are techinically live I dont necessarly consider them to be.  I think of live bite as the dog taking down a bad guy who ernestly wants to harm the dog.  Although in this situation I would fight along with the dog.

At first, I thought you were asking for bites on us. That's another topic. but my dog(s) having a live bite. My male, almost 9 yrs. No.  He was being trained for a police K9 but my Department didn't want a K9. Last year he got into a fight with a (might spell it wrong) Mandio Ring Mal in New Mexico and put a hurting on that dog. At first , I was worried about Reiker and jumped in to help but Reiker was awesome!.

My service dog was explosives so no bites. My female, will be explosives along with the pup. So no bites for the female. The pup is an awesome dog so I'll look into more training and possibly titling her so she'll do some bitework.  Now I've seen some bites on the field and myself once.

I have had 4 dogs on the road in police work over a period of 12 years ............. with over 300 felony apprehensions I was able to stay away from many apprehensions with a bite .....  I still had  44 apprehensions by force (bite) which kept me about 15% when you look at apprehensions verse apprehensions with force ...... the first few bites with my first dog I sort of got some what excited but after that it was business dealt with the job.    Regards ....................  Greg

I forgot to add in my above post !  Depending on the type of dog (personality) you can obtain a bite without training for it ...... but will happen in the lower percentile of most dogs.     Greg

My male Murphy has had at least 2-3 live bites (possibly more) when he was living with my ex, but none under my watch as I don't allow him around strangers. Murphy has always been very territorial about his property and his people and has had no training in personal protection. Murphy will warn before biting but most people are clueless when it comes to reading dogd and think they can makes friends with any dog. (Not Murphy) Murphy is now almost 11 years old, can barely walk and would still bite a stranger on his property.

We train all our dogs in personal protection 2 years ago had someone on drugs walk right into our home at 1am, had the doors unlocked since I was expecting my hubby anytime.  Well 4 of ours dogs jumped him he had bites/scratches all over him.  Cops came and were surprised how banged up he looked, lucky my 2 serious dogs were in bed with me!  I think most dogs are great judges of character, our dogs are also Therapy Dogs and go to schools/nursing homes this guy wasn't right and they knew it.

one of my dogs had multiple live bites , and he didnot need any training to do that , not that he didnot have any training

it all has to do with the available drives etc in the dog , mine is simply stated high on defence and natural suspicion , and very low on pray
in his early days he would only respond to people coming towards me behaving strange , but not if they are moving away ,
Im training a son of him ho is basically the same now for PPD  he is 10 months , im training control and much more control , and bitework training is only important to teach him to out on command

My 4.5 year old male trained in Police K-9 has a total of 9 live bites, 7 where during training on a decoy, 2 was in real life.  One guy was trying to break into the home, the second was when a guy put his hands on me.

Of the dogs that had formal training prior to their live bites, what was the progression of training that you used? Was it tug-pillow-sleeve-bite suit-hidden sleeve? Did you do muzzle work with them as part of the training?
