Is Belgian Malinois replacing German Shepherd ? Some people say Malinois is replacing German Shepherd , some people say that who used to use Belgian Malinois is getting back to German Shepherd again. Whats the truth ? Is Belgian Malinois just a working dog and can't be pet ? Belgian Malinois does not have the size and look that a German Shepherd has. Is it a negative or positive point for Malinois ? Pls all the dog lovers, come and lets discuss this over here.

I know that some sportmen used to compete with Malinois have bought GSD now, for example Marko Koskensalo have a GSD puppy now.

Thanks Lynx So you know some people who are getting back to German Shepherd. Are police and Military also getting back to German shepherd ?

I have know people who have kept Mal's as pets and did not work them at all.  The owners were joggers and the dogs went with them daily.  I beleive the German Shepherd learns faster and retains more.  If you go back into some of the peidgree's of the working German Shepherd, you will see dogs that look very much like Mal's.

i think that most of the GS are cleaner in the head as MLN and therefore people prefer to have them but if you want to win races and also have a dog as a pet you must find a high-quality breeding station of MLN. There is very much waste, aggressive, antisocial and shy dogs. but I have three MLN and there are great. with my female I was at the World Championship but she is my pet too.i can go with her everywheree i want - to my school, to city....  is important to find a good breeding station at first and then it is does not matter if you have a good GS or MLN.  (www.nigen.wbl.sk)

I have to agree with genta, it depends on the dog.  I have 4 Mals, all of whom live as my companions.  The puppies are typical Mal puppies and very high energy but they will learn and calm down.  My adults are wonderful dogs I can take any where.  Even my protection dog is very social as long as he is introduced to you properly.  My sport girl will hug anyone she can get to.  I also like GSD and own a 13 yr old black WL girl who is sweet and social with people.  It is an individual thing and you need to decide which is best for your situation.

I agree, it is a personal thing. Both breeds are generally capable of doing Police and Military work as well as sport work.
People have deep emotional ties to their dogs and by extension the breed. And as very often in these cases, will start from a belief and find facts to support their belief as opposed to the other way around.
I have heard WL GSD people who have been disappointed with their dogs go to Malis, I have hear PO's who were disappointed in their Mali's go to WL GSD's.
Remember what you see on the podium is a culmination of skills, handling, training and genetics! It is not the breed only! And even in Police departments, it may not always be that the department prefers a breed on purely objective information or that the information would apply to you for your goal. What about pricing, and ease of acquiring dogs, shipping, contractor relations etc. All these are factors that could impact on the decision of which breed or individual dogs are chosen. Not to mention sometimes the personal preference of the persons involved in the choosing process.

My opinion is to start with your goal in mind and then research toward that goal. I love GSD's and have friends who love Mali's and I also own a Dutch Shepherd now, and have respect for all three breeds.

As much as I love GSD's I would never use some bloodlines in my breeding program, because of personal preference. And similarly if a colleague of mine has a Mali as his Law Enforcement K9 and it serves his purpose, then hats off to him.

I think to have a good working dog, or sport dog that is safe in the family, and has the edge to protect while still being able to turn it off, can be gotten in both breeds. But you have to try to find those individuals and see if it fits with your individual talents and abilities.

Margit Van Dorssen said to me in her interview- ' Look at Jogi'sdog Eric, and Dieterich's dog Quatro ( referring to the then BSP and Youth Sieger Champions), and you know the same dogs in different hands, would not be so successful ' and she was referring to the individual dogs and their quirks and how talented the handlers are to have campaigned and trained these individuals to that point.

Personal CHOICE+SKILLS= RESULT -desirable or not desirable.

Thanks,

Vit Singh

Malis think a little different. Both are good dogs. I own both breeds as well as Dutch.

@SportySchGuy, - how does belgian malinois think different from german shepherd ? please try to give example so that people can understand our topic and discussion better . Is it true that as Belgian Malinois is smaller in size and less in body weight , they do not have as much power/ strength as a german shepherd has ?

If you just want to have walks with your dog,  Bicycle with him/her. Play tug , play fetch ball and expect that he will lie on your bed and sleep silently, then get a labrador or any toy breed.

A high energy working dog needs work to survive. He/she will not let you sit in peace till you WORK him out.

This ON/off switch concept is bull crap. Don;t fall for it. The On/Off switch dog is basically a low drive dog. Ask any good breeder and he/she will tell you that. A true High Drive Working dog as envisaged by breed originators is not supposed to sit idle unless he /she is kenneled or crated.

cheers
