Hello All,

What is your opinion on giving raw bone for chewing for a 4.5 months old puppy who is teething ? Is it ok or better not to give ? Even with out bones they keep chewing on things like wood, plastic items or even toys. But they will have atleast a few hours of time pass if its a raw bone.

What do you all suggest ? I appreciate all your advises.

Thanks

The bone should be large and strong enough that the pup cannot break off pieces of it. NEVER cook it. Freezing also will make bones more brittle so you must watch the pup when you give it a bone. I also suggest removing most of the marrow out for young dogs as it sometimes is too much for them and will give them loose stool. At some point in the future, pick the bone up and safely dispose of it and give the pup a new one.

Thank you hodie. But what about teething ? Is it still ok ? Some times I worry about his teeth but all other toys like sqeaky toys or rubber balls etc ......usually he doesnt show much interest or will be done with in a few minutes destroying them. Only a bone will last about a day with some intervals.
Sometimes his gums get hurt with the bone edges and bleed a little bit. But I find many breeders giving raw bones. What about those smoked bones from the grocery stores ? Can we give them ?  I have seen that many people are negative on raw hide bones, pig ears, smoked bones etc. Why is that ? Why only raw bones ?

Thanks

Hodie- You always give full information to any question & consequently there is no chance / space for others to add any more details. Could you please stop it.

Pass you best regards

For a pup, I think it is ok to give the smoked bones, but personally, I don't. If I am going to give a bone, I prefer to give one that has not been processed. Especially with dog treats that are manufactured outside the country (China, and other places), the processes are not state of the art and involve a lot of chemicals I prefer not to give to my dogs. Another reason for some problems with dog treats, including pig ears, etc. is that often they are contaminated with salmonella and other bacteria. This can be problematic for young dogs especially who have immature immune systems, and it can also be a big deal for humans who do not wash their hands and end up ingesting the bacteria themselves and become ill.

If you have never seen either a human or a dog ill with salmonella, you have not missed much. It is UGLY and not very pleasant for the person or dog.

Hi Tarek. OK, I will shut up. I am trying to avoid doing some real work......LOL. How are you my friend?

You could try the frozen washrag trick for teething relief. My pups always like it.

The other problem with smoked bones, is they just make a mess. Cheap ones can have dyes. Don't say I didn't warn you!

My rule of thumb, is anything cooked, cured and colored is off my grocery list. Buy big, uncooked stew bones from any meat department at your local grocer. The only thing I caution with this, is that some stew bones are fattier than others (fat content varies from bone to bone). From my experience, this *may* cause runny stool. Good luck!

I have a 3 month old and use raw marrow bones.  I have my butcher cut up about 20, 4 inch bones (cost me about $20 usd) and give my pup 1-2 a week.  My pup is doing great on them and I think the raw bones are the best to give.

I also give my dogs raw beef marrow bones.  I do freeze them though - they last a lot longer and the dogs love gnawing the frozen bones even more.  But they are both adults and know not to swallow any broken pieces, so for your pup I would follow Hodie's advice to give fresh and to scoop out most of the marrow.

Go to your grocery store and ask the Meat Mgr to cut you some Meat Marrow Bones...Usually I ask for ones for my big dog...like 1 /2"-2"....Gives them hours of fun and for the puppies it's great for their teeth and gums...Because of them teething...I will also give the puppies "ice cubes"...and I give them Nyla Bones but I wet them and put them in the freezer for a little bit...It's great for the puppy's teeth and gums as well...
You have to be very careful what you give your young pups to chew on...Nyla Bones and Kong toys are great for them and will help strengthen their jaws which in turn helps with their ears standing...
