My male GSD 15 months has started vomiting again.  He was sick last week with Dhyareia, we went to the vet they gave him some Metronidazole and said it just may have been a stomache virus, within a couple of days he was back to normal and just fine. This morning at 3 am he started vomiting and has dhyareia again.  I have a vet appointment this afternoon for him again. I have felt his stomache and it feels just fine (not hard), He is running and playing as if he was just fine.  I have not given him anything different in is diet.  I was just wondering if anyone has experienced any of this in the las couple weeks?

I hate when they get sick, I worry all day about them.  I just hate it.

You are doing the right thing to take the dog back to the vet. There are many possibilities for the dog vomiting and having diarrhea. One simple explanation is parasites, but there are viruses, bacterial infections, partial blockages, and many other potential explanations for this. The good news is that the dog is acting relatively normal for now. Take a sample of fresh stool with you for the vets to examine. Just take a plastic spoon and pick up a small amount of it and put it in a clean plastic baggie. Keep it cool until you go. This is very important so your vet can look at it under a microscope to see if any parasites or bacteria or other things are noted that should not be there, such as blood.

Good luck.

Metronidazole is an anibiotic treatment of bacteria and is effective treating Giardia as well.  Bring a stool sample to the vet.

Yes I too have had the same problem with my shepherds which started last week as well.  This all occured about the same time that we had many birds just fall from the sky and die.  Scientist still have not figured out why this happened.  We also ourselves had problems with vomiting at this same time.  Seems strange to us and we have talked to several other breeders who say they had the same problem last week as well with their shepherds.  They thought it was something the shepherds ate that did not settle well with the dogs.  I agree you are doing the right thing per rule of thumb when dogs get loose bowels metradonazole normally will help.  Our vet recommended Pepto Bismal in an adult dose which I found strange but it seems to have settled all of our shepherds stomachs and they perked right up. She probably recommended this though because one of our shepherds is nursing with puppies.  Thanks goodness it worked because this could have been quite a terrible occurance.   In any case I just thought to share this with you as I completely can identify with what you are going through. Our vet, oddly enough said, since last week she has seen quite a few dogs with these symptoms.    And to top that off we know quite a few people whom also had the same symptoms which started last week.  STRANGE!  I am glad you posted your information as if confirms my suspicions.  And to think I crawled my husband for not cleaning the kennels properly!  Maybe it is just a virus.  Where are you located? Did your State have the problem with the dying birds?  Many States in the South did.

That is creepy that your family got sick too wolflady.  I know YR posted about one area where they were culling the birds on purpose, however, in other areas they haven't come up with an answer.  Very strange indeed.

hodie - Thanks for the info.  that is what I am worried about is a partical blockage but I am perinod when it comes to my dogs.

Denna - Thanks I hope it is as simple as a virus.

wolflady  - I have not heard of any birds dying here, we are in Utah.  I hope there is nothing to the birds though.  Good luck with your dogs.

Yes thanks all of our shepherds seem to have recovered and are doing much better this week.  I have one though male that has kidney and liver problems that is having a hard time getting his system back in order.  We are going to the vet this afternoon to see if it affected him differently and if he can recover from this.  He is my heart so I am in hopes for good news.  We just had his blood checked before Christmas and all was fine.  This incident I hope is just a setback and we can move forward without any more incidents or bouts of loose bowels and vomiting.  Good luck with your shepherd as well and thanks to all for listening.

The issue of the dying birds is something that is seen often, but not reported. No need for everyone to get riled up about it.

And yes, winter time is a great time for viruses and illness to circulate, not just among humans, but also among our companions.

If is possible that the OP has a problem with a parasite and the dog was not cleared of it, or somehow has been reinfected. Giardia especially, as well as other protozoal infections can be difficult to eradicate if there is surface contamination anywhere. Many of these organisms form spores that are very resistant to environmental conditions.

Take the dog to the vet. Take a fresh stool sample and keep us posted. It is also possible that your dog has some sort of digestive issue that is just now showing up. When the dog does not have diarrhea, what are his stools like?

Hodie  -  His stools always look great, I feed him Orijin Chicken, Turkey & Fish formula.  He eats twice a day once around 6:30 a.m and then again around 5:00 p.m.  I have been feeding this for a few months now.   Thanks for your comments, I don't worry about dead birds or anything like that.
