I have been following the "culling" thread and noted a couple references to spaying and neutering puppies. I was sent an article by a friend, but decided it might hijack the other thread, so decided to share here: http://time4dogs.blogspot.com/2010/12/rethinking-spay-and-neuter.html

The topic of spay/neuter was recently discussed (early spay neuter in particular), and someone posted www.medhelp.org/user_journals/show/144600/EVIDENCE-BASED-APPROACH-TO-NEUTER-SURGERY-AND-INTRODUCTION-TO-EVIDENCE-BASED-MEDICAL-PRACTICE
A very objective, non-biased break down of all the pros and cons, percentages and studies included.

When this topic came up previously, I remember one breeder saying she had held a puppy reunion for one of her litters. She could tell right away which dogs had been spayed or neutered early, because they were all much taller than the dogs that had been left intact, or spayed/ neutered after peuberty.

The taller dogs are more prone to joint and ligament injuries, so early spay/neuter can be dangerous if you're planning to do sports with your dogs.
