This topic adresses what the dog is feeling and thinking,
in contrast to their human partner..
Whether it is dog training or horse training you must try
to understand how an animal See's things. I hope to get
good commits about training technique as well as stories
that may relate to how your dog reacts to you when you try
to ask him to sit, stay, out, stop barking ,or let go of uncle Eddy,
...what ever.
Than relate it to how the German Shepherd was bred and trained.
Did you know that tracking was used to judge a dogs mind set and
temperament. Not just a attribute for scent detection.
Please no hecklers...this topic will help beginners and advanced.

Topic does not help anyone when people posting have no clue about the subject. Very few people here have ever really studied anything relating to how dogs think....including OP. So much of the drivel posted on this site needs careful scrutiny by anyone reading. It is a rare individual here who has any real knowledge....We know who those people are-------------

Wahrheit,
Good point....Let me prime the topic a bit.
I start with the sit and down with my dogs. The thing with
the sit command is it tells me where the dog is and about
how long it will take me to train that dog.
Rex my kelpie learned this command in about 15 minutes
or less and just about anything else I taught him was learned
very quickly. Rex lives and breaths to be with me and that is
more important to him than food.
From the sit you can tell alot about a dog's willingness to
be compliant.. Generally if it is very difficult to train a sit without
food or other motivators it is a sign you my need to focus him
more than the average dog.

I always try to see how other's see things, two feet or four feet.
I do have many instances where I can see my dog thinking. When he disobeyed on purpose because it was against his sensibility. This can however, be overcome IMHO.
And 15 minutes to train sit seems like a long time to me. I've done it in less. The lie down is the harder one. Stay is even kind of easy, but not for a long time. That takes discipline and repetition. The learning stuff is actually quite easy for the GSD, maintaining the desire to do it is another.

Max, I think the down tells me 10 X what the sit does. And 15 minutes is a very long time for the sit. It takes approximately 3 seconds for me to teach a dog to come and do an automatic sit. Plus, we don't teach a dog to sit or down. They already know these behaviors. It is more about communication.
Using a dogs thinking? First thing that comes to mind is when we move backwards on recalls, etc.

I tell Prince to down or sit.....and he does it ever so sloooooowwwwwww....looking at me all the while......I can't help but laugh thinking about it.....rascal....

Ruger1, how did you teach these exercises? Or was it Kelly that taught the dog? Just curious because we can probably Obedience train a dog in 2 weeks, but its gonna look slow and unenthusiastic. Not a big deal if it is just a pet, but for sport, it's all about speed and precision. At least, that's what I tell the ladies. ;)

Don,,,
I taught Prince his basic obedience commands and 95% of the time he was enthusiastic...I always used treats or a ball to get that enthusiasm. Kelly taught Prince about the precision, great heeling and tons of other things....She taught him to be more precise without treats or a ball as well as enthusiastic....He is only sloooowwwwww on an occasion.......; ) When he is being a rascal....
