We are in crisis and under 24 hour care.
Is it possible for pyometra to cause bowel nerve dysfunction or bladder dysfuction? Baytril and Clavaseptin are not resolving issue. Lower bowel not functioning (upper bowel seems to be) and now bladder muscle responsible for contractions is stumbling.
Pyo surgery complete 4 days ago but likely stump remaining. Visible on ultrasound. Culture not complete. Second surgery tomorow
Loss of function of lower bowel and now bladder muscle. No prior Hx of issue re bowel/urinary function. All happened same time as deterioration now associated with pyometra.
We are close to losing her if we cannot determine cause of bowel failure.
We need ideas. Please offer if you can.
Much appreciated

I dont' know, just wanted to say how sorry I am. Praying you find the answers.

Yes, it is possible, as the operating field is within close proximity of other organs in the hypogastric region of the abdomen and sometimes it happens that infected tissue of the pyo comes into contact with the lower intestines. The bladder lies very close to the uterus and can easily be affected as well. A pyometra is a serious infection of the uterus and the operation is sometimes very difficult and unfortunately intestines and bladder can be affected. Second surgery is necessary to determine the exact cause.
I'm sorry to hear that you go through this, but unfortunately these are some of the side effects that can happen and have happened before with different vets.

It sounds to me like your girl is going septic. The result is multi-system organ failure. The prognosis for any being, animal or human, is very grim. I send you & your girl my prayers. jackie harris

Kidney and liver function normal. Mild white count elevation but nothing else. Vitals excellent. But has lost the ability to contract large bowel. Her attitude is good. Vomiting however as we have not been able to clear intestinal tract.
We are removing stump today. More culture.
The loss of function occured prior to the first spay surgery. Likely just a few days before we spayed.

Maybe the large intestine is so irritated by the whole mess that its not functioning properly?
Is it possble that after a time it may improve? What has your vet said?
I'll keep you in my prayers.

In recovery in ICU. Small stump removed . Everything sent for culture. Here is hoping. Honestly, a healthy dog...watched carefully...but the infection may have done some nasty work. No one knows. I am trying to remain positive. It is difficult. Here is hoping we have some luck on our side. Every dog is different. She has never been textbook.
