Titans Mom

by Titans Mom on 05 January 2011 - 19:01

Hello,

Our breeder sent us home with Pro Plan for large breed puppies.  So we've been using this for the past two weeks.  However, the Vet thinks that our boy is a bit lean and he does look thin to me in his back end.  Of course the Vet suggest using their own brand Hills, which I'm not opposed to, but want some feedback on what's good in the markplace (in Canada).

Thanks so much,
Lori

If his coat is good, stools are good, eyes clear, etc., then I would stay with the Pro Plan puppy food. I would rather have my pup looking good and a little on the thinner side than a fat puppy. Pro Plan is a decent food so if your pup is doing ok on it I would leave him on it. Maybe add some raw hamburger to his diet. That would help him.
I agree about the Hills Science Diet, I would not feed that to my dog ever.

It's always a good idea to listen to your Vet as opposed to an internet forum. Having said that, we use Iams & raw meat (chicken or chicken & bone).

I would never feed ProPlan - urgh!
I would feed a proper raw diet if possible.
If this lacks appeal, feed Oringen large breed puppy formula - it's a Canadian food and THE BEST!!!

You will feed waaaay less and your growing puppy will benefit over his lifetime from a good food.

good luck,

Alex

I agree that you should listen to your vet.
However, as long as your puppy is healthy, you can try out foods and find one that works best for you and your dog.
Arcana is made in Alberta.
I also fed my puppy Legacy Raw Food (legacypetfoods.com/Home_Page.html) patties (they come in beef, chicken, turkey or chicken necks&bones). I don't feed raw and kibble at the same meal but raw food for dinner and Arcana in the morning.
I prefer raw but I need a dry food for times of travel so I need my dogs to be used to that too.

vets do tend to like extra fat on the dog, unlike my Dr.  HA HA.

i used science diet for years. thought it was the best. got intrduced to iams lamb and rice. my dogs love it. they have nice healthy coats. i also feed a chunk of raw beef to each dog every day along with their kibbles.sometimes if i am at sams i will buy some chicken legs and  thighs. sometimes they have the big bag of chicken parts.

your puppy is getting over an intestine infection??

which science diet formula did the vet prescribe?

if its the one for sibo dogs, i'd stay one it for a few weeks to give your puppies intestines time to heal and then SLOWLY go to whichever food you choose.

SitasMom ... what are you talking about???

Titan's Mom Orijen large puppy is an excellent kibble and I had a great deal of success with it on my GSD puppies and also with my adult female when I needed to put some extra pounds and energy into her for trial time.
