Have you guys ever had anyone want you to ship your dog's semen dirrectly to the bitch owner so they can do the AI themself?

I have come across this situation....there are a few more details and I will share if you all REALLY want to know....... and I already have made up my mind on how I am going to handle this situation but just was curious.

That seems like an odd request......Never to the owner, always to the vet doing the AI......

Seems to me if someone was going throught the process of getting semen shipped in,they  wouldn't want to cut corners and risk the chance of jeopardizing the success of having a litter..... JMO

If fresh chilled, we do our own AI's all of the time. Our local repro specialists has  0 - 2 record with AI'ing our dogs and we have a 4 - 0 record. I don't see why a vet would need to do any AI unless frozen if the breeder is experienced.

I just assumed that if it was shipped it would be frozen.  Unless the breeder is experienced in the process of preparartion of  frozen semen at  precise timing,  I would still have to question the risk of shipping it to the breeder...  But than again, I guess if it was just for the sake of money., than a person could ship to whoever pays and don't worry about it. .But I am sure since Vicki is posting this, it isn't all about the money...

One a side note, I do believe that those are who are experienced with doing AI's have a better success rate doing it themselves, than most vet's success rate....JMO

I thought it was an odd request too!  They would like to have a litter out of Sam but.... the person has limited funds (I told person that they would need to do progestrone and would also have to pay for the collection, prep, and shipping of the semen)  I already gave a MORE than reasonable stud fee of $500 for Sam and agreed to let bitch owner pay the fee when puppies are born.  The person didn't really think they needed a progestrone and thought they could do the AI themself.  IMO, if you are shipping the semen to the bitch owner who is to say if the bitch owner handles it correctly or if it is REALLY being used for the bitch you agreed too, what kind of warranty would you give if any at all...I usually give a 2 pups or it's free warranty or you get a re-breeding.....  Is the bitch owner going to trash your male when her bitch doesn't come up preggers?  Is bitch owner going to accuse you of sending defective semen........  It just bothers me that I would use alot of my time to do things correctly on my end to send a wasted collection to a bitch owner as described above.

I have already decided to decline the breeding but even if I didn't I don't think the bitch owner would be able to come with the costs of the breeding.

Vicki,
I think you are making a very wise decision....It just isn't worth it.....There are so many possiblities that could go wrong after the shipping, that you have no control of....Not saying this person would do it, but it could all be blamed on you and/or your dog....

Sam is too nice a dog to take that chance..Like I said, It just isn't worth it....

But isn't that just like you, to try and help someone by making it affordable and wait for your money when the puppies are born.....I admire you for that....Just proves that its not always about the money....There are still people like you that are actually doing it more for the love of the breed, than the almighty  $$$$$....
I thought I was the only fool trying to help people by doing nice gestures....Whew...guess I'm not a fool after all....

Though my only experience with AI was back in the  early stages, I've assisted @ the Vets and unless the person has previous experience in multiple AI's I'd not want to trust it to a lay person.

The points you brought up raced thru my mind as well.. as it's always the Stud's fault when something goes wrong with a breeding from the bitch owner's point.  Including misses, infections from non steril infusion. no guarentee on who gets the Semen, or if indeed more than one bitch is bred with it.  If you sent a strong vital sample of Semen you couldn't be sure that they didn't get other bitches bred as well, claiming it was someone elses puppies than Sam.  Guess 30+ years of seeing dirty tricks even from "friends" has made me jaded...

If you were me i would say a big NO 'NO' to the person owning this Female. If they cannot afford the fees then they cannot afford to rear a Litter of Pups. In other words they should not be considering breeding from there Female, It does not look they are trying to improve the Breed but there own Pockets would be improved probably
