For Roscoe, who had been abused, the slightest hand movement would send him to the ground peeing on himself. With a good e-collar set on the very lowest setting ( I could not feel the correction when applied to myself first) I taught that dog everything. He turned out to be one of the best dogs I have ever had. He had the most amazing recall, especially for a hound dog! The e-collar was never used as punishment. For Roscoe, the gentlest method WAS the ecollar and he was as soft a dog as they come. A flat collar correction was too much for him but the tiniest correction from the e-collar was perfect.
Any tool can be abused. That guy sounds like a jerk. I'd like to light his @ss up one good time with an e-collar.

E-collars are a tool, and when used sparingly and fairly can help correct problems.
But they should never be used on a regular basis. There is no tool that can or should replace good basic foundation work. E-collars are a lazy way of bypassing foundation work.
For example, you have all seen them...dogs who work exclusively with an e-collar on.
Show me how that same dog works without the collar on.

I wish I had video but Roscoe has been gone for a long time.
Roscoe was the only dog that I have used an e collar on exclusively for training. It still took a good 6 months ( you know how hound dogs are) for training, which doesn't seem like a short amount of time to get what I wanted accomplished.
People use all kinds of tools a a crutch. What is the difference between a dog that misbehaves without the pinch, or someone who only takes the pinch off right before a trial and crosses their fingers, K9 handlers that trick their dogs into thinking they are wearing an e collar ( I know it's been done) by tightening a flat collar where the ecollar would go.
It's a tool and nothing more. Used properly and not abused it can be an awesome tool just like any other.
