I have a 16 to 17 year old corgi mix that was dumped as an puppy. He is now showing signs of arthritis and I am wondering what other have used for bedding. Currently, he sleeps on a twin mattress in the master bedroom; however, he is beginning to struggle with steps. I want to put a bed downstairs in the family room, but something a little less tattered and a bit smaller. It needs to be tough as he has torn a couple of mattresses pawing at them prior to lying down. Any suggestions or personal experience?

I have a plastic bed with a large soft bed  that I put inside the plastic bed for my old 12 year old she loves it

Perhaps you could get a couple memory foam pads then make a zippered cover out of something extra durable he would have difficulty tearing?  You could keep the covers washed and repair/replace as needed.

Sounds like he lucked out where he got dumped.

Darven,,,I have a very fussy geriatric Great Dane,,,,

She will settle for nothing less than all the pillows off our living room couch...As if thats not enough already the pillows have to be set just the right way and covered with two soft blankets...

The funny thing is that we allow this.....

I have a great option for a dog bed for old dogs or dogs with arthritis or HD health issues. This bed is like a cot and used in many shelters in North America. It is easy to assemble, easy to clean and comes with a guarantee (if your dog can chew it you can return it). Sounds like I'm selling it but I'm just a great fan and love it for my dog. It is the only dog bed I would get.

You can order it online and it arrives fast after your order.

I know several people who use crib mattresses, as they provide good support, are generally well-constructed, and you can cover them with a waterproof crib sheet if you've got an old dog with incontinence issues.

I also recommend Kuranda beds, I have them in my kennel for all my dogs and the seniors love them!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have been using daycare cots for some of my other dogs, did not think about that type of bed for the "old man"! I think I will order from kuranda and see what he thinks. I might add a memory foam bed nearby and let him decide. This guy has earned his keep over the years with rounding up horses running toward the highway, rounding up kids, and finding a neighbors missing yorkie! He deserves the best! Thanks again.

we use a crib mattress - as suggested above.  works very well.  doggy beds are worthless.  they squash down to nothing when a big dog lays on them.

Thanks hex and ziegenfarm. Actually, that sounds like a grand idea as a choice for this guy. Like I said, he has been sleeping on a twin mattress, but want something a bit smaller for the family room. Crib mattresses can be found at a reasonable cost as well, generally less than some dog beds. Thanks again. Deanna, I hear you about allowing these old timers a comfortable place to rest their aching bones!
