Hanny ripped through her crate and stopped an intruder at my door when I was away, and then did a wonderful bark and hold - standing guard at the doorway not leaving the house eventhough the door was open.
My neighbors gave a me a full account of everything that happened. They called the police, who called animal control. I came home to a surprise! I walked up and put a collar and leash on her, petted her and told her to relax, then brought her out to meet everyone.......She was as happy to be off guard and ready to socialize and hob knob with everyone - tail happily wagging.
She's a VA rated Showline from the Czech Republic.

Relying on an untrained dog regardless of breed or line isn't a good idea. Natural instinct is good, but without training or testing you have no way of knowing how the dog will react in certain situations and if it will actually protect you or your family during a crisis.
Do your research, look at the dogs carefully and be prepared to test them. I would only purchase dogs from breeders or vendors that train the type of dog your looking for. Also, just because a dog has a Schutzhund title and will bite the sleeve, it doesn't automatically transfer over into protection work in the real world.
Good luck

Hanny has been trained in sport and to protect, she is confident (very improtant), and has a very even temperament (even more important) and she was socialized to everything. When I tell her to guard she does, when I tell her go relax she does. There is no guess work. She does what I say.
I work obedience with her every day and we do bitework once a week. She doesn't have a perfect show heel, but that's OK - she's retired. Every handler she's ever worked on has commented that her grip is amazing! Solid, strong, deep and calm. When I tell her to "out" she does. Its hard to find such a good dog!
We had the whole family over for Christmas and she played happily with the children whose ages ranged from 18 months to 13 years. She even got along with my step son's 10 yo lab who came along for the party.
Without the training she wouldn't be as realiable........... no dog would. Just becasue a dog has protection instint doesn't mean it's a protection dog.
What if your kid's playing rough and tumble in the yard with a neighbor's kid?
What would a trained dog do?
What would an untrained dog do?

You have to decide what you want in a dog, and seek out a breeder whose goals match your needs, whichever line you choose.
