This is the first time that we are faced with this "problem/situation"......
We have an older female, excellent health (blood work up confirmed) come into normal(?) season.
We planned on breeding her. We have done progesterone testing every 3 days....no rise.
She remains at .02. Tried "ovulation pads" (thanks Judy!)...no change in color.
She is now 20+ days in....no more blood, no swelling...still no change in ovulation pad.
Has anyone ever had a female...come into season, not change in progesterone levels & not ovulate?
She has no infection, excellent in health & no other noticeable restrictions. She did rise in progesterone her last season, but we were too late for the breeding.
Anyone have a similar scenario?
Thanks,
Robin

Probably a split heat. If so (sounds like it) she will not ovulate this time - check her carefully for the next few weeks - usually in 2-5 weeks from now she will come back into what looks like a normal heat (again) but normally she will really move quickly - she may stand on the 2nd or 3rd day and be finished by the 5th (or something like that) - she will spike her progesterone quickly and it's easy to miss her. I have a female who always has split heats, and it takes vigilance on my part and daily "outings" with one of my intact boys to make sure I don't miss her when she comes back in.

That sounds about right to me. How old is she? Things begin to become much more difficult with age.
Be vigiliant.

Robin, Did she swell up like normal? And I would say either she is spittiting her heat or she maybe getting to that age where she may not ovalulate with each heat cycle.

Hi Robin
Just went through that same scenario Willow came into season a bit of blood - vulva swelling. Seen blood Dec 4th on Dec 13 went to vet for progesterone less than 0.2. Then the swelling went down not a stitch of blood to be found. Willow is 7.5 years old I want one more litter a breeding to Zeager, I want the 3-2 line-breeding on our bitch Teela. Will now watch for a split cycle. Willow is healthy happy house dog.
Best of luck to us both..

I had one female who didn't ovulate until around Day 25 of her cycle--well after many females would be out of heat. It *can* happen that way.

BlackthorneGSD...I do understand...I too have a female that didn't take until day 24..she is pregnant.
The female in question is almost 8yrs old....so I will watch VERY carefully...
BTW..she has only had 3 prev litters..she has not been overbred. This is the reason we did complete bloodwork on her, including Brucellosis, vaginal cultures etc....ALL test results were excellent, especially for her age.
This would be my 1st litter with her.

Niger,
Females that are healthy can be bred over the age of 7 & 8yrs old with no problems.
But if you feel better not to breed a female that is 7rs old...that is your choice, and you should do what you feel is best.

I had one female that was .2ng/ml on day 8,
less than .2ng/ml on day 10.
But was 3.4ng/ml on day 14, so they can rise fast
