Now that I've stopped laughing...

Quick background.  Back in August we brought home three five week old kittens, they each weighed less than a pound at the time.  Hanni, who has never even been around puppies, adopted them and went into mothering mode like you wouldn't believe.  She wanted to clean butts (they weren't so sure about this) she talked to them through the door and every so often I'd let her into the room to clean up the food stuffs they scattered around.

Really she was a perfect Mommy.

Well now they're six months old and she is still Momma.  It's been interesting watching her go from very attentive, to playing with them and equally watching them grow up and go to her for comfort or snuggles now and again.

Fast forward to Christmas morning!  Everybody got some toys for Christmas but Momma wasn't sure she approved of our choices.  The kittens got little fuzzy mice (not real ones) and Hanni very deliberately gathered up each mouse and took them to where she could inspect the mouse.  I thought perhaps she was playing a game of keep away with the kittens until my son put down a little robot insect he got in his stocking.

I was laughing as I watched the kittens all circle the insect (one of those little robots that skitters on the floor till it runs into something then changes direction...) with kitten intensity, ready to pounce!  Well almost immediately Momma turned from her collection of mice and with delicate firmness, she put herself between that little insect and her babies.   The kittens swarmed around her feet, looking at the insect but now leaving it for Momma to deal with.  Hanni started to bark fiercely at the bug and looking at me with a firm expression of 'Get this thing away from my babies!'

I retrieved the bug and after she had nose checked each kitten to ensure they were well, she went back to the pile of fuzzy mice, which she is now laying on.

She keeps giving me these looks that clearly indicate when it comes to her 'babies' she does not trust our choices in toys!

Hanni is what a good dog should be around young animals, Jami is was the same way with Arnold kitty. She took right over when this little kitten was abandoned. Thank you for sharing, loved the toy inspection.
Always,
Cee
