Not LOTS of garlic on food; too much garlic is toxic, so be careful w/garlic.

Diatomaceous Earth- FOOD GRADE. Google it;-)

I agree 100% with Jenni on the garlic. I do use garlic but in very small amounts. I use Diatomaceous Earth and a product called Neem. You can google Neem. Unfortunately there is nothing that is 100% against fleas and ticks...but I will tell you some of my dogs (mostly my Border Collies) have had wicked reactions to the Flea products (Frontline, Bio-Spot, etc). So I won't use them. I use DE, Neem and check my dogs thoroughly and frequently. I use DE (human grade) in their food and also spread it in my yards when the season comes.

NO GARLIC - old wives tale

Garlic thins the blood and should be avoided period. Use Dawn dish soap as already suggested, leave it on for two minutes then rinse thoroughly.

It's good that you arelooking for options as the traditonal stuff such as Advantage, Bio-spot, etc. are all poisons, not to mention they can be fatal to some dogs.

One word of caution with DE (even the food grade, which you MUST use)- it can really irritate the lungs and potentially cause serious problems, so wear a mask and try to protect your dogs by creating as little dust as possible or even by putting a mask or something over their noses when you apply it.

I have always used Olive Oil ..Vinegar and small amount of Garlic and have never had fleas or ticks in over 27 years of raising Shepherds

It's NOT an Old Wives Tale. It's a proven fact that garlic and gun powder given in unison will give a dog vice like deep full grips.  Gun powder and garlic mixed together kills fleas.ALL FLEAS AND TICKS.
i mix my gun powder in pumpkin.

truthseeker - I never said not to use Garlic externally, which is what I am (assuming/hoping) you are doing along with gunpowder?, feeding Garlic is a No No.

Having said that, if it works for you and your dogs then continue with what works for you.

In Canada we only use gunpowder in our bullets
