Cascade Schutzhund Club is hosting its second canine first aid seminar in February 2011. The seminar held last year was the most informative and innovative dog seminar I ever attended. The vets who conducted the seminar brought a canine CPR dummy that had a pulse, breathed, etc. It was invaluable in learning things like WHERE to feel for a dog's pulse, what it should feel like, how to give CPR to a dog, mouth to mouth, etc. And, that was just part of the seminar, though by itself worth the price of admission . Of course, the vets also brought a very accommodating LIVE dog for hands-one work, too. :-)
For those in Washington, Oregon and BC: Yes, it IS worth coming and staying overnight, if need be. There are hotels and restaurants near Cabelas. This is in the Hawks' Prairie are of Lacey--lots of stores, malls and restaurants within 5 minutes' drive. :-)
Date: February 5, 2011
Location: Cabelas in Lacey, Washington.

I took a K911 emergency course years ago in Michigan. It was only offered to people with valid EMS, RN, or Physician licenses (I believe because of the advanced methods). It was an incredible class and we learned all the first aid as well as advanced methods such as needle decompression for bloat, intubation, IV fluid boluses as well as IV starts, basic meds. It taught us to do basic health checks both the daily and the more invovled ones before and after working the dogs. It took some practice to get the more complex health check down to a few minutes but we did and could spot in an instant if a dog was not 100% before whatever was wrong got worse by working them.
I highly recommend the course, it is well worth it.
