I"m thinking of getting a dog from Lackland AFB. Has anyone else ever adopted a dog from them or have they gone through the adoption process?

I have a friend who was in the K9 division out there years ago and back then she said they didn't adopt out trained dogs, just those that washed out of the initial testing.  She is not sure of how things are now.  She said it was an incredible experience out there.

I did read where the the trained dogs are sold to police depts and thats ok. I want to train the dog myself. I just dont want to get a dog with little to no drive.

Has anyone worked with their dogs?

They do not allow anyone to purchase there dogs.  You can give em a call and ask to speak with a GySgt Knight and if there is anything that can be done about purchasing a dog he would be the man to talk to.  He is stationed at Lackland and is in charge of there dog selection.  They adopt there puppies out at a early age to people in the local area and bring the dogs back once they can start training.  Usually the foster parents of the dogs would keep any dog that isn't accepted back or has a health issue.
Good Luck

Hmmm,

There is a section of adoptable dogs offered to the public free of charge. Im not looking to buy one from them. I have however suggested them to a few depts who were looking for a dog inexpensively. No one ever got back to me to tell me how that went.

That is a situation that they took a dog back from the foster parents and the dog did not perform the way it was expected.  It isn't that it is impossible its just that so many people have to sign off on paper work when they try to adopt a dog out like that because so much money has been put into it.

Hey Jerry this should be ideal for you.... They don't let anyone purchase their dogs, shouldn't stop you from trying to sell them on though, lol.

Bazza,
You are correct.  I knew somebody just could not resist cracking a joke.  Its ok that was in good taste.
Merry Christmas Bazza!

>  Go to the site. They have 2 separate listings, one for law enforcement, and one strictly for adoptions. Both are free. However for the LE Dogs you must present a request on department letterhead signed by the head of the agency requesting, and for the reason of wanting one.
>  Over the years I have selected a few for LE purposes to include my current partner. With the correct training , "ALL" turned out to be great Police Service Dogs.
>  They are very helpful and will give you all the assistance needed in procuring one.
