 Hi guys,

I am about to take in a pup that needs a new home, but was wondering how much she would grow. Her owners need to rehome her because they are moving. She is 6 months old, and I did not measure her height when I met her. I just wanted to know how much taller she would get. I have another female that stands at about 22 inches, and was hoping she would be the same atleast.

soo... How much more growth do you expect from a 6 month old dog on average? I know that it's not a science, but she is fairly petite now.

My male went through a growth spurt at about 12 months!! I'd say he is maybe 2 inches taller now than he was at 6 months.

At six months though, in general, your new dog shouldn't be getting much taller than she is now.

I've always heard the rule of thumb that at 6 months, a GSD is 2/3 of adult size--it seems to hold fairly true.

Thanks Guys. I think I just got myself an even smaller shepherd than the first... oh well. She really pretty. I'll post pics later.

I am obsessive about heights and weights at different ages, so I have measured many.  A male gains almost precisely one inch (2-3 cm) from 7 months; a female gains about 3/4-7/8 inch or 2 cm from that age.

From 6-7 months it is more variable.  If the dog has been well fed and well cared for, she will only grow as much from 6-7 months as she will from 7 month to full adulthood.  If she has been underfed, however, and you begin her on high quality and plentiful food at 6 months, she will gain more from 6-7 months than afterward.

The short answer is that a female will, on average, gain 4 cm, or almost but not quite 2 inches in height at withers, from 6 months to 2 years.

If she is underfed and poorly cared for, however, and you begin immediately with high quality treatment, she may gain a full two inches or even a bit more.

Just how small is she?  And what does she weigh?

This female grew almost 2.5" from 6 months on, but she ended up big (24.25").

Interesting, MVF!
Did you notice this development only in a certain breeding stock (same ancestors) or certain line or throughout the breed?
