Verbal praise and tug.   I don't "hide" the tug though, the dogs know where they come from anyway....  I carry it in plain sight, they learn quickly to ignore it until offered.  Which also keeps many bad habits from forming regarding them bouncing around looking for where you "hid" it.

Good one, Greg. I was thinking communication/voice. I don't use a clicker. Too much to have in my hands. I would rather use my voice to mark and tell the dog no when I have to. Every dog is different. I like the Ball on a rope, but if the tug is preferred by the dog, I would definitely use that.

Yes! Tug and body language!

The best for our GSD famale so far is a Frisbee. Couldn't get her to focus durring heeling for anything until I tried tucking her Frisbee under my arm. She loves to play tug with it more than her jute roll or anything else. For us it works.

Hmm, Tug. Yeah, definitely the tug. My dog will do anything for a tug. And I agree with animules, I don't hide it either. Occasionally, I will put it somewhere I can reach it, but it's not on my body, so that he doesn't always have to see it to do the commands.

He loves the ball on a rope, too, but I like to train in the house, so I can't really do that very often, lol. Nice mix of tug and ball.

Also, I like to have a mat on the ground my dog can go to on command. Helps in a lot of different ways, I just can't think of many right now. But for the distance sit/down/stand, I know it helps.

And just a regular tennis ball. My dog loves to catch them in the air, and fetch them, so I can use it inside and out. Very nice for a 'quick' praise. Throw the ball in his mouth, then get it back, or for a really good job, I can throw it.

And lots of verbal praise, of course!

it is my believe some people just don't understand how important verbally praising your is.

My voice. Its immediate and quick. Keeps the dogs mind on task once the deed has been praised.
