I am a bit confused since I am receiving different answers.

Some say the best day for mating  is once the bitch stops bleeding completely which is approximately day 14.
Some say when the blood color is changed to yellowish color which is approximately day 9.
Some say when the bitch stands for the male regardless the above.

Other than taking your girl to a vet to tell you exactly which day is the best, there is no sure way to tell which day is the best for conception.  I always let mother nature run its course........ I always count my days from the first day I see blood and attempt to get a breeding beginning on day 11......However, I am the type of person that is constantly checking my girls for the first day by passing a white tissue on my girls tushy, to check for the first spotting of blood.  I have had pretty good success with this method....

Good Luck......

nona-so you mean the 11th, day from tracing the first blood spot on the white tissue, am I right?

Then how many repetitions is 3 with a day separation is enough? or it is better to continue till the female rejects the male?

It is good to make a day off gap in between two mating so that you do not tire the stud i.e 48 hours between two matings, and go on till the female starts refusing the stud, but then do try every 24 hours for three more days to make sure she is completely done.
To make sure it is not a split heat, watch the female less she has another heat in 2 to 6 weeks time.

Best of luck

Hima- thanks for  your post, however what do you mean with split heat & how can she has another heat in 2 to 6 weeks time.

This is something I have never heard of.

Please clarify.

by Ibrahim on 16 December 2010 - 21:12

Actually it is not common but does happen sometimes especially when there is a sudden shange in living environment, weather etc. The heat is split in two periods, usually she does not conceive in the first part but does in second part. Pls refer to these threads for more reading on split heat.

Tarekallam, I usually do two breeding skipping a day between each breeding.... You got to realize that the sperm will remain active enough for at least 48-72 hrs after mating....So after the 2nd mating if your girl ovulates within those 48-72, there is a very good chance the sperm will still be active enough to fertilize the eggs....I would not breed for more than 3 days from first breeding to last breeding....Thats why I said, day 11 or even day 12 after first sign of bleeding is a good starting point.....This is not written in stone for EVERY bitch....Its just a "in general" starting point......Hope this helps...

Hi nona, well explained, I agree to the science in what you said but I'm sure Tarek's stud is not much used so one more mating will be much appreciated by both the dogs, lol.

Hey Ibrahim,
I made those statements knowing nothing about what dogs she is referring to.....Perhaps this is a followup thread to an earlier thread I am not aware of.....So I answered with an "in general" answer to what I read as an "in general" question......Surely if the dogs she is referring to are both inexperienced, that should consider to be answered with a different opinion.

Very good observations from sexy Nona and Ibrahim...What I do ......1.First day of blood discharge: go to vet and do a Cervical culture........ 2.De-wormed female so it wont pass to pups if any on her............... 3.after 4-5 days culture comes back, if any bacteria, put her on antibiotics for 7-10 days...... 4. Around 9-11 days, usually discharge starts getting lighter, check/smear for cornified cells on microscope. If at least half of the slide is full, then do progesterone............... 5. You may finger her, with a glove, to see how open she is and if there is suction/muscle closing inside, which means she's almost ready;keep checking for lighter color, flagging, if progesterone over 8-9................. 6. 14 days after first deworming, do it again as now some parasite eggs are released because of the rise of Lutein hormone... Use Ivermectin...Ivomec... .........7.Breed and every 2 days apart, like Nona said, sperm lives inside up to 72 hrs or even more in some cases, so is just over using the male and getting them both tired of the process............ 8. HOLD the female, unless she's a veteran, so she doesn't twist or go to the floor ,which can damage your male . Another reason not to over use him................ 9. After 2 breedings, 2 days apart, if you going to keep breeding, finger and make sure she's still receptive ( small finger should go all the way in ) and if she still flags................. 10. Don't give her any weird food, raw fish, some cheeses ,food sitting outside, etc all of these grow bacteria, which can affect the fetuses development. Good luck,
