BHall, you are going to have to give a hint, I'm still trying to figure out if I'm looking at the esphogus or the airway. It does look the pup swallowed a "bear claw".

Well, I placed this girl on November 29th. She was (still is) in perfect health. I get a call 3 days ago from the lady telling me the puppy has megaesophagus and it is so bad that she will have her euthanized. She said the puppy had labored breathing, is lethargic and in a lot of pain. I asked her to please bring the puppy back so that I can get a second opinion from my vet. Of course I would do the same thing if this poor girl was suffering. I also asked her to bring the vet records.
She brought the puppy back to me yesterday. She told me that she is not able to eat and to only try canned food.
Well, I went against her advise since this pup did not have any problems here.
I fed her TOTW dry kibble since yesterday. Guess what? She is eating like a pig, tearing my house up like a puppy should. No vomiting, no diarrhea. Just a perfectly healthy, playful puppy.
When I looked over the vet records I noticed that she took this puppy to the vet on the 4 times in the 10 days she had her with complaints of vomiting, diarrhea, labored breathing etc. The first 3 visits the vet could not find anything. They ran tests such as Parvo, Giardia, Fecale, CBC, GHP. Everuthing negative. On the last visit (The day she wanted her euthanized) she was diagnosed with megaesophagus.
However, I have a feeling she swallowed something. She is NOT doing any of these things. She is the most perfect puppy that loves to eat (Dry Food) and tear up the house.
I will upload a short video in a minute of her playing in my kitchen this evening.

BTW, you can see the trachea on the bottom and the esophagus on top.

LOL Rik, a bear claw? Hope you mean the sugary kind!
Birgit, what kind of contrast was given...intestional or IV? And what symptoms had the pup that warranted an x-ray? I am more comfortable interpreting human ones, yet the lungs look too whitish to me. Intestins look full, partial filled with air. Long shot without knowing anything else, so take it with a grain of salt ;)

hello BHall, I wanted to commit on mega-e, but could nor determine if I was looking at the esophagus or the airway. Hence my original comment.
I am not a vet, but do have experience with Mega-E and that is the first thing I thought from your x-ray.
from my experience, the pup will eat, then regurgitate. It can be detected by an experienced vet easily. But if the passage just below the spine in your x ray is the esophagus, then the pup probably is mega-e.
again, not a vet,
Rik

We posted at same time. Megaesophagus would show very defenitely with oral contrast. You could radiograph her with your vet to be sure.

Correct, they will eat and regurgitate. However, she does eat but does not regugitate.
She eats and keeps it down and has normal bowel movements. She did not do it while she wqas here until the end of November and is not doing it now. That is what I don't understand.
They gave her oral contrast.
