The need for help and support for rescuing, transporting, fostering, rehabilitating and re-homing truly wonderful dogs is a emergency levels in this dismal, desperate economy. These are opportunities for the many, MANY dog lovers on this board to really stand up and make a difference, even with minimal effort and investment.

My own beloved GSD breed is in particularly dire straits. No longer is the GSD in the shelter because there's "something wrong with it." Literally hundreds of GSD's I would be proud to own are surrendered to over-crowded shelters every day in this country right now, many with excellent working ability, advanced training, perfect social skills, because the people who bought those adorable puppies cannot or will not take care of them anymore, only to be forgotten and PTS for lack of interest on our parts.

The potential for a nationwide transport and foster network is unlimited here on this board. I hope I see a lot more of you getting involved in the breeds we profess to love and care about, regardless of your personal breed of choice. Can't afford to donate? Post rescues. info, pix and links on your Facebook and Twitter pages, your website, other message boards, pet related and otherwise.

IMO There is a job for every good dog, and a dog for every good job, even if its just decorating a lonely senior's living room or making sure nobody steals motorcycles from a shop at night, snoozing under the book keeper's desk during the day.

Wake up and make a difference folks, especially you breeders, trainers and boarding kennel owners. We owe it to the dogs whether we produced them or not.

I challenge everyone reading this to do as so many of us have decided to do for Christmas and Hannukah this year: Tell your friends and family that instead of a gift, you would prefer they send money to the rescue of your choice. Lord knows they need it, typically flooded with surrendered animals during the holidays to make way for stupid trees and cheap decorations, guests and family members they'd just as soon see fall off the face of the earth, and to buy people presents that the recipients neither want nor need.

GOING SOMEWHERE for the holidays? Why not post your logistics here and query the rescue org's along your route as to their needs for transportation of dogs or supplies? Instead of that extra suitcase in the truck, how 'bout a bag of decent dogfood or two, or a few toys and supplies, or the digital camera you got for Xmas LAST year and still haven't bothered to figure out how to use?  It ain't so awful much, and it could mean another few precious dogs' lives saved.

I think we need a HEROS thread, specifically for kudos for anyone we hear about who has stepped up to the plate. I'm hoping it breaks every existing record for views on this board, and that the moderators have no need or use for the nuke option. Choose "positive" this year. It sure feels better than its inverse counter-part when you hit the rack at night.

Great ideas Shelley and I know many here will step up- I sure will. The true heroes are those that run rescue groups, such  as Steph, who give all of who they are and everything they have to help the homeless and unwanted dogs. I have endless admiration and respect for them.

Here's another idea to add to what you suggested: What our family does for Christmas every year is we draw names and we get  a small modest gift for that person, but we also have to donate a substantial amount to a charity in their honor. As a family filled with animal lovers, we have donated a good bit of money to animal rescues (as well as other charities) and it is a great feeling to know we have helped others during the holidays, rather than being so self-involved.

BTW- glad to hear you are taking a hiatus on breeding your dogs- hopefully more breeders will follow.

Most of the working dog sports and all of the K9 units I know of DO NOT exclude spayed/neutered and/or unregistered dogs from participation.

Hint, hint, hint.

as if my own 3 dogs were not enough, how the hell did I end up with a horse.  I wish i could let him run the neighborhood at night and eat the neighbors grass.

Great post Shelley,  I have 4 rescues here now,  but you know where I live, in case of any transportation being needed.  Lida

Here is an opportunity to shine like Santa on Rescue Railroad this Saturday  in only 60 miles of travel per legs, two legs open in the northern mid-West.

This is a great idea!  I wish I could take on another dog (or 3) but my husband is firm on one being enough.  If I ever get a vehicle I can depend on, I would be happy to provide transport.  Right now is not a good time for me.
