LadyFrost

So, this morning I took my 8 month old puppy Bailey to Humane Society to have her altered (reason I go to Humane Society is because I know staff and I know my dog will be well taken care of, I get good price on surgery, free chip, overall physical exam and they bundle it all with booster shots all under $100.00) so anyways, I walk in and a tech is getting this guys 2 small dogs ready for their neuter/spay so he (the guy owner of 2 small dogs) is eyeing me and my dog, when tech. leaves he starts talking asking questions about my puppy and then out of nowhere tells me he would like to have her and would I sell her, I said I had adopted my other pure bred from here and he can just ask to be notified when a GSD is brought in, he said…oh, no if they come from here they are fixed, he wants a female for his male…..I almost chocked…this guy does not know me or my dog, no idea of her health, hips, temperament, issues she may have, nothing….and he is willing to buy and breed her…I truly was shocked at the proposition and completely taken by surprise… I asked a guy “are you kidding me?” just than a tech came back gave him copies of his paper work and he left….I am dumbfounded that this even happened….
It may not be a big deal to some, and maybe it’s just me and because this is my puppy it struck a nerve….and just simply pissed me off....what a nerve....

Why in the world would that surprise you ? Everyone has preached spay and neuter for more than 3 decades, and there is no noticeable drop in shelter dogs. Never will be.

I have pushed that they pile the dead near a major highway with a sign that says "SEE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE !" But they tell me that would be being to mean to people.

Jeff, over reacting are we?  They were just ranting about an annoying experience, I too have had similar experiences.  Didn't surprise me, but it sure did annoy me.

I don't know I guess you are right...I just didn't think people would be THAT bold....for Christ sake i was in there to have her altered....not to have her reproduce...I am not completely out of touch with reality and heard horror stories about backyard breeders...but don't they usually have a better cover story for purchasing a dog..was he really expecting me to say..."oh, lets step outside and talk about the arrangements...and here is the leash, please take care of her"... it's just....so plainly bold and arrogant and....just plain...red neck (best i can describe based on my impression).....

No offense, but the most enlightened about animal health and welfare generally are not found hanging out at the local low-cost spay and neuter clinic.

Phew! Oookay, at first I thought it was the VET TECH who wanted to buy your dog! Now, that REALLY would have bowled me over!

Nope, not too surprised at this. I guess the only surprise is that he was getting his two small dogs neutered!

Jenny...true... I can't find a good vet where i live but made some good friends with staff at humane society partly because their doc is from California ...ever since i moved from CA to the south...I am more culture shocked than anything....the things people do here is mind blowing....the lack of common sense and appropriateness of questions, aproaches...anyways...I didn't think this was common....this was my first time where now i can think of a million things I should have said but too late now....

What's the big deal? I would take it as a compliment if someone wanted my dog. After all, he is gorgeous :-)

Haven't you ever lusted after someone's dog?

LadyFrost, where in the south are you? I might be able to help with some veterinarian suggestions, if I know anyone close to you.
