Show or working....these distinctions sometimes baffle me.  I don't know why some of you "guys" keep your dogs, be it for one or both of the abilities mentioned above.  However, for me the dogs are first a companion and a family member.  Wrapped into that description the dog should have certain attributes such as to protect the family when threathened and to be a to work on the field, be it KNPV or schutzhund...or even in the show ring.  Now I have a working line and with that I'm expecting a bit more from him as a protector vs a showline dog.  Not to say that both do not have or carry this trait.  You can have a poodle have this trait.  However, I have seen a lot of so call tough working line dogs that are not fearless!

Today I witness a situation.  A bloodhound got loose from his home and wandered into my front yard.  He moved from garbage bin to garbage bin.  I took a shovel and banged it against the fence and startled him.  He jumped up and actually moved in on me.  Thorowing rocks at him and banging the shovel did not deter this dog.  He kept coming.  Even when he had the whole road and front to flee he had nothing to do with this.  He came forward barking and growling.....no fear.  You could see it in his eyes!  He did not fear for his live even when he had a chance to escape, but kept coming.  I have been around a lot of GSD's and Mal's and I can tell you 99% of them in this situation would run!  Don't forget, he is the neighbour's pet dog, in a strange yard, in an open environment...but showed no fear!

Where has this trait gone?  I have seen this before in the very old GSD lines and once in a blue moon, with a pit bull.  But not in today's dogs!  Is working now only mean on the sport field or in the show ring?  Where have all the good ones gone.  Neither DDR, Czech, or WG lines, it doesn't matter.  Where?

Is that really a "tough" dog or just stupid?

A dog that wanders away from home and get's into the neighbors garbage is a good dog?

by tenmon on 07 December 2010 - 17:12

Why is it that when a general question is put to some of you readers that all that can be expected is sarcasm!
Felloffher....where did you get from this general write up that I'm saying a garbage dog is good or bad?  This could be your dog that got out of the gates and wandered in my yard knocking over the garbage cans!  This is a deeper probing question which your feeble mind can not contemplate?
Alkster....I'm not talking about training a dog. Same go for you and Grossman!
I'm talking about the heart of a dog, trained or untrained.  So if all you have is your usual sarcasm that I keep reading from all your responses on every thread then do not contribute or respond.  Please

What did it do when you hit it with the shovel?

by tenmon on 07 December 2010 - 17:12

Don, I didn't actually hit the dog.  I hit the fence to chase it away, but it got startled for a bit, turned and came at me.  I banged the shovel on the ground and it circled me and I took some gravel and whatever I could find and threw it at him.  some actually hit him and he bearly flinched, and kept coming.  This went on for a good minute while I kept him at bay with the shovel,  then he heard his owner calling him and he turned away towards the street, stopping and turning, barking and went home!  He was quite clear in his eyes with no fear what ever!

I'm not being sarcastic at all; the dog doesn't sound too bright.

So it was behind a fence?

by tenmon on 07 December 2010 - 18:12

You're right Keith!  let's just drop it since you still did not get the whole jeist of the write up.  You have zeroed in on one and only one part of the whole illustration, and that is what spurred the question, and you can't seem to get off the track.  Like the old turntable.  The needle got stuck and if I don't nudge it, it will keep going on and on and on......

Wake up!
