Does anyone have any idea what could cause a condition like this in just one area? Apart from his rump his coat looks healthy and glossy.
????????
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

To be honest, I'm not sure exactly what cured it because I changed dog food and I treated them both with Revolution.
But it cleared right up. I'm guessing it was the Revolution. Not for sure though.
One or the other fixed it.... Hope this helps.

Interesting the idea that it could be temperature change.
Could I ask what Revolution treats? (As I am in the UK).
Encouraging to hear that others have seen this same issue and cleared.
Thanks again, We gave him a bath, but somehow I can envisage a trip to the Vet to check.

It wasn't the temperature with my two, but that may be the case with yours.
Revolution treats fleas, ear mites, sarcoptic mange mite and is also used for the prevention of heartworm, roundworms and tick infestations.
Let us know what you find out, I'm curious.

I will let you know if we hopefully discover the cause ..... probably via Vet.

'Ol Nelson suffered with this last year exactly as you mentioned, absolutely splendid glossy coat but with flaky/crusty skin on the croup. We didn't change his food or treat it with anything specific but it cleared up after we went on hoilday with a new furminator in hand - seriously thorough daily grooming sessions along with daily swims in the sea.
I don't know if it's the same with your hound but Nelson's coat starts to get much thicker around the rump/top of the back leg and he doesn't seem to 'blow' (all of) his coat at specific times but I reckon the combination of clearing out all the old dead hairs (to allow air onto the skin) and a rinse in salt water did the trick.
Cheers,
