Yesterday I left my two dogs at home in their crates while I took my mom for her chemo for 5 hours. Although they like their crates I normally don't keep them in there when I leave the house, but the housekeeper was there when I left and I didn't want the dogs to get in her way. I got home late and since I was having a little get together at my house with a few close friends I just let the dogs out in the yard for a few minutes and fed them. Typically (but not always) I take them for a short walk in the evening, do a little training of some sort and maybe brush them a little, but I didn't have time. After the party was over at around 10pm I went in my bedroom and found that every item had been taken out of my purse (hairbrush, wallet, phone, small mirror,lip gloss, pen, pencil, some papers and box of mints) placed all over the bedroom and the living room. Nothing had been chewed or damaged at all and my purse was on the chair where I left it, just empty. BTW, she had to open zippers to get everything out. I found this to be very interesting. There are plenty of other times that I haven't stayed with the routine,so I don't think that was the trigger. Both dogs were out in the family room with me while company was at the house, so they weren't gated off in the bedroom or anything. We have company over a lot so that wasn't anything new and she was getting plenty of attention from the company too. I know it was my female, Shelby, who did this because she has always been the mischievous one. I know it wasn't done by anyone else at my house as no one went to that part of the house, plus they wouldn't have done that anyway. What do you think my girl was thinking other than possibly feeling a little neglected? I am quite amused by what she did and would like to know what others think.

Man that is a hard question. I couldn't tell you what goes on in my girls head most of the time, and we've been married 43 years. I do hope you find out .

Definately a good question. I would think how close with , in tune with the dogs the owners are with, and honestly how loving they are with the dogs will shape some of the answers. (if people think their dogs are "humanlike")
One of the biggest concerns I have was when sya a former girlfriend is not a dog person, (never works). Say you come home from the grocery store, 10 -15 bags, and you sent them down. The dog(s) can't say "hey, what did you get?" so they sniff, kook in the bags, just being curious? And they can't understand that. Start screaming or yelling etc; Or if the dog(s) wants comfort or attention and wants to lay at or on your feet. And the girl is trying to push the dod away, saying "go away" or "Man, these dogs are at my feet...." Things along those lines.
Honestly it could be ANYTHING I would like to think some deep, sentimental, loving thing;
Is this dog bonded to you or your mother most?
Did your mother come back to the house from her therapy or did she stay overnight? Yes, it would be awesome for them to speak and really know but it's nice to think we know.f I she stayed overnight, I would like to think she was searching for something of hers? If you give her treats or "something special" maybe there was one down in the bottom of the purse? Maybe a crumb? IMaybe a smudge of chocholate? In the seams? My dogs can do or go after some strange things. And most of the time I want to know why or what it is. Sometimes it's obvious, others I have to do a little investigating and others I have to do some backstep. Others I have to accept I won't know.
Does she know (really know) what items are? I can lay out balls, kongs, ropes, rags and ask my dogs to grab an exact item and they will. Maybe you do this and she was just working by herself? Keeping herself occupied?
In all honesty, my opinion, she was looking for something. curiosity wise or intentional, who knows? Dogs have a funny way of saying their upset with you or they think you're neglecting them. Most of that being negative, She just could be playing a joke/game on you and wants to see your reaction. We might never know. Try the same scenario again and put a video camera on the purse and let us know what happens?!

Thanks for your thoughts on this Alboe.
My mom has lived with me for 2 years now and has been getting chemo for a good part of that period of time, so I am doubtful it has anything to do with that. Shelby is more attached to me than my mom. Shelby, in the past has, has gotten into my purse looking for treats, because I do keep them there at times, in a baggie. She is a therapy dog and after our therapy sessions at the nursing home I always give her treats as soon as we leave the building. Sometimes there are a few left there in my purse and in the past she has just searched for the treats and once found, she eats them and that is it. She has never before carefully removed everything from my purse and placed all the items on the floor. She carried some of the items as far as 25 feet away from my purse, but most were left on the floor next to my sided of the bed. She completely emptied my purse.
As far as placing toys on the floor and asking her to pick a particular one, I have never done that.
Thanks again! I think this may be one of the incidents I'll never understand, yet still find it amusing!

Hey Vickie, I think that could be all that it is! I just hope she doesn't try to use my lip gloss next time. I don't think it's her color :)

Monty Hall stopped in and said to Shelby -- "Let's Make A Deal" (you may be too young to remember that show).

I'm lost here. Are we saying a dog can't make his/her own entertainment???

by starrchar on 03 December 2010 - 00:12
Alboe, I think maybe she was trying to entertain herself, albeit a little strange!
