Define what type or level of protection work the dog would be required to do.

As a generalization, perhaps as a "watch dog" that barks at people approaching your house or car.  As a real personal protection dog, I would highly doubt it.  Those instincts and drives have been bred out of the American Show line dog for years.  When I think of a dog for a PPD, I think of a dog that has supreme confidence, excellent nerves, strong drives and a strong temperament.  A dog  that enjoys the fight and is willing to engage a man and bite for real.  These are not the attributes I would use to describe American Showline dogs.

American Show line dogs make nice pets and are certainly great dogs for people that want a pet.  I would never count on them to do more than bark.

I'm sure someone more experienced will chime in, however maybe it would be more productive if you didn't ask blanket statements that are supposed to apply to an entire line.

Wouldn't it be better to look at the individual parents and see what traits they will be putting into their offspring?  If their parents had traits that would make them good canididates then it's a decent gamble that the pup will also fair well in protection.

As long as you  know that it would be FAR easier to find a suitable canididate in working lines, than in American Showlines.  However I'm sure (or at least I hope)  that their is an American line breeder out there somewhere, that incorporates working ability in their breeding program.   Good luck.

If the mother and father exhibit the protective qualities that you desire, then go back to their parents and do the breeding again and select from there.  Puppies from the recent combination are just a crap shoot.

I've heard of American line police k9s before, although they've become even rarer than they were 10 years ago.

As far as doing schutzhund? Yes, some of them, definitely. My first GSD, my first working dog, got his SchH3 and was a reliable worker--and actually very easy to train in all phases. He was a very honest, never-give-up tracker, a joyful dog in obedience who wanted nothing more than to work with me. In protection, he had a good balance of prey and defense. He bit full, but not hard--he just didn't have the musculature in his head/jaws. He passed his Sch3 three times, IIRC, the 3rd time at the North American Championships.

We had an American line GSD stay here before.  She would jump all over the fence, barking extremely deep trying to bite whoever was on the other side of the fence (don't worry people did not get close enough)  This dog tried to act like she wanted to kill any and everything...........a person comes in the yard and she would head for the hills, biggest chicken I had ever met.  The other AM lines I've been around had practically 0 drive, no protection instincts, and were TOO friendly to strangers.  They were the dogs that would show the intruder where the stuff to steal was at.  If you're looking for anything more than the Schutzhund sport.....maybe, but I highly doubt it.

I have an american line that is a great watch dog and will bite for real (has proven so). He is unable to do SCH protection work as he has no interest in biting the sleeve. He is AKC titled, got the BH and I tried to train him for the watch dog title (WH) until he took things to seriously. However, he is a nervous dog and thats why he is so good in what he does best: ....sounding the alarm.

My friend has an american line as well, she will be trialing for her SCH1 with him this weekend.

Elkoorr,

You have just defined a fear biter, put some pressure on that dog and it will be gone.

Sure they can be trained to be a protection dog,,,,,,,,,,,,,if you're not really interested in keeping your stuff.
