My GSD is 9 months old now and having off leash control is something that I would like to have.  He is extremely motivated and does not react negative when I do correct him with his choke collar.  I have  put him on the 20 ft. lead plenty of times and have tried giving him a stern "NO" when he does not come back once I recall him.  everything works fine when I have that lead on him. Once I take it off he knows the difference.  Should I just be patient with him or should I try a shock collar?

Maybe you should hire a trainer to help you out?  Any dogs for sale lately?

I never scold a dog for not coming. I always give lots of praise and treats.  Coming to you should be a good thing.  Maybe that is where you are going wrong.  Try giving him treats when he comes to you.  Also, try  changing  the command for your come to something new.

Jim, that never happened. That thread does not exist. Check for yourself.

Jaywalker, I think 9mos is a tad young for reliable off-lead control, especially considering your experience. I thought you were a MWD handler??? This is pretty basic stuff you're asking, and I'm not trying to be nasty, but perhaps you need to do what Jim suggested and hire a trainer. Or, you could send him to whoever did Prudence's training in Germany.

Red sable I have not tried another command.  I have always used "Here"  And I always give treats and lots of praise once I get what I want.  I have only used that type of training with him.  Just a correction here or there when he knows what he is doing is wrong.  My concern is that one day he may need to come right back to me for safety reasons and I don't want him to think that he can come back when he is ready.

I just mean, now he knows he doesn't have to come to "here"  unless he wants to, so if you are going to start fresh, use a new command.

That makes sense.  I wasn't looking at it that way.
Thanks Red Sable.
