My first dog was not papered, half show, half working, Father had it all done but mother was a guard dog in my friend's company and I loved he (show female) and they bred them and I got my male. he was 200 slovak crowns. at that time about 20 bucks..!Now he would be maybe 50 bucks.

All it measn that one of the parents or both were not papered, or one orboth did not meet the requirements for breeding. Title in SLovakia is not the only qualification for papered puppies. You have to do it all!

There are a lot of dogs that do not have the pedigree in Slovakia, not only GSDs,all the other breeds too. Their progeny cannot get the pedigree,of course.
If you have a pedigreed GSD its progeny can be registered only if the dog passes all the requirements :
1.elbows and hips must be done with the passing score
2.the dog must be shown at the exhibition getting V,SG or G.It cannot be just any show,it must be either a specialty show for GSDs /there are about 8-10 specialty GSD shows a year/ or it can be at the show for all breeds but the judge must be either SUCHNO or SV judge
3.the dog must pass a trial - at least SVV 1,ZVV 1, IPO 1 or SchH 1
4.the dog must pass the breed-survey test
If both parents fulfill these requirements only then the progeny can be registered.
Lot of people have dogs without pedigree, these puppies are cheaper.I sometimes gets calls from people interested in buying a puppy and they say:"We don´t want papers,we don´t want to go to shows,we just want a pet".I have to explain them that if a dog has a pedigree,it doesn´t mean they must go to shows or trials,it means they CAN. Most of the people don´t know about the health tests the ancestors of these pups must have done, about the character tests and so on.They are happy they get a cheap pup, according to them why should they pay 200 to 500 € for a GSD pup if they can get one for 50 €.BUT on the other hand, they are willing to pay much more money to have their dog trained than they are willing to pay for the pup.Me and my husband,we have a dog school plus we board dogs, and I can tell you that 90 percent of the dogs we train don´t have pedigree. It´s a pitty as I see that this won´t be changed for a long, long time.

Prager,

Are you saying that buying an unpapered dog is a good route to take? I would personallly take a chance on the dogs genetics if someone experienced picked out a pup for me from an un-pappered litter. I would just prefer to gamble on the genetics, and pay for the experience. Are there people that bring over untittled pups, and how much would they cost?

Thanks

I was told that ONLY dog with titles, breed surveys, etc were allowed to breed in countries like Slovakia and Czech Republic. Apparently this it not true - puppy mills exist everywhere.

The dogs cannot get pedigree papers unless they pass the tests, which makes total sense to me. But for people to imply that un-pedigree'd dogs don't exist in such countries - well, I thought it was a little odd.
