Red Sable

by Red Sable on 28 November 2010 - 21:11

These are traits that were inborn into my shepherds that my friend has noticed as compared to his, traits that I really have to thank those (the breeders) that bred these shepherds, because IMO it has made them great dogs, to have, and to work with.

1. Loyal.  With a capital L.  My dogs listen only to me, no matter how often I walk with my neighbour and his dogs, they still after 100 times, do not give him the time of day.  He has tried to call them to him, has given them treats and to this day, they act like they do not hear him.  I have NEVER had to teach either of these two to be aloof.  It is in their genes.  That to me is priceless.

2. Lightening speed recall.  They come to me lightening fast and do a perfect sit in front of me close enough to touch.  They do that naturally, I have not had to train that into them.

3. Focus.  Both of these dogs look me in the eye and watch for every command.  Another thing I have not had to teach.  It is genetic.

I have had previous shepherds that I have spit food out of my mouth and did all the gimics to get them to watch me, - with these two, I have not had to do that at all.

4.  Defense.  My male is still young and I have not tested him as of yet.  My female is 2.5 years and has shown great defense and civil aggression.  She is tough and relentless and will not back down.  Great watch dog.  Obviously not everyone likes that, but I do!

5. Great drives.  For ball, tugs, food, lots of prey drive.

6.  Great Looks.  I like how both these dogs look.  Of course they are not perfect, but people notice a difference in them as to compared to the average GSD.  Their structure IMO is very close to what it should be - what I like..  Obviously the long hair on the female isn't quite to standard, but I love it. Her angulation is what I like, she is extremely agile and   lightening fast.
My male is growing up to be quite an impressive dog, he has a little more angulation than I like, but nothing to severe.  He gets comments from strangers often, as does my female.  So, on the whole, no complaints in that department either.

Here are the pedigrees,

I'm hoping others will join in and tell what they like about their dogs, along with the pedigrees.  I really like to see what is behind these pedigrees.

so you haven't had to train your dogs at all?

Where did you get that from?  Some things are just genetic that make it so much easier.  Those I have mentioned. And compared to my past shepherds these traits stand out.  Yes, of course I've had to train them.

Of course there are things that are harder to teach these two also, but that isn't what this thread is about.  I decided to keep it positive.

you said all those traits were inborn.  Aside from above what did you train your dogs to do?  I'm not trying to be impolite or rude.

I think what I said, was these traits that seem to be inborn with these two WL make them great dogs for me to work with.  The fact that they are aloof, have high drives, are loyal, have lightening fast recalls, would make them good for sport but also they make them great companions.  Right now I am in the beginner stages of PP and their drives make training easy.  That is all.

What do you like about your dogs Turk, what are they like?  Can you describe their personality traits?  What is their pedigree, and what do you do with them?  Are they easy to train?  That is what I was hoping to achieve with this thread.  I'd love to hear why others like their dogs, and why they consider them good Shepherds?  What do you like about them?  Why do you think they are good examples of the breed?  Not just for sport but for any endeavor?

Do you have to teach them to watch you, or do they do it naturally?  Are they naturally aloof?

Red Sable I love my dog.. he is a good dog, there are people who hate my dog because he is "handsome" LOL and he is working dog, he is always accurate in searches. He never quits tracking no matter how shitty, old, crappy and difficult the terrain might be. He bites well, he reads the helper too much and sometimes he drags them like his new "bitch". He loves to give me the finger when I am far and he is supposed to "out" He makes me laugh by sneaking into my roommate's bed. His has this aura about him where he doesn't have to prove nothing to nobody. People look at him and they respect him, kids are so cute and he tolerates them. Adults have restriction and their kids toss him a stick and sometimes whack him with it and he patiently waits untill they throw it. He is a good dog. He is Sch3, FH2 and he has proven to me that he deserves to be retired and absolutely rude to my cat!

I doubt this is a good sales pitch but enough for me!

LOL
