I am amazed at the number of people who are turning to the board who have NO IDEA of what to expect when they arrive home with a new puppy or older dog. Why have they not contacted their breeder first?

I see here at the moment we have 2 puppy buyers after only 24 hours complaining about  their newly purchased puppies mouthing, toileting inside, jumping up on them etc. and already pondering if they have done the right  thing in purchasing a puppy.

As a breeder neither of those people would have left my property with a puppy.

How much homework do they do before purchasing a new puppy? None I think.

How much time do they spend talking to the breeder of their puppy and the most important question is ~

How much time does the breeder spend talking to potential puppy buyers?
Do many breeders actually inform people of what to expect when they arrive home? Just how much information do they give them about biting, toilet training, jumping, crying and all of those other annoying and yet so lovable things that puppies do?
As breeders do they question the reasons why said buyer wants to own a GSD?

Sorry but I just had to vent.

All of my 30 something puppy buyers over (8 years) have always contacted ME first if they needed advise and I always thoroughly vet my puppy buyers and I have never been afraid to say NO if I feel they would not make good owners.

You are so right!

It is amazing what questions breeders are not asking! I certainly would agree to that because a poor match never ends well. The truth is most breeders won't take a dog back! Ask the rescues... the breeders that do take dogs back generally don't need to because they screen the buyers properly.

And in the end it is the dog who always loses...

Now for the sake of defending the ignorant.... but caring, decent folk, they are sold a bill of sale from the breeder to the pet store, and the 30 minute TV trainer that, hey I  want that! I can have that!

Take my sister, she has two dogs that are wired to restrict certain behaviour and they aren't trained at all. She thinks since her furniture and food are unmolested things are working out just fine. Well, it does make me cringe.

I have learned ... can't remember who said it but it is true, one can NEVER  TELL someone else how to raise their kids or their dogs..... if they want to stay friends.

....oh, and I might add, they won't neuter the A. S. because the breeder has it in their contract... and my brother-in-law thinks he can stud out this untitled, unruly but lovely specimen of the breed. ...

IF they become breeders I might as well stick my head in the toilet!!!

To True, Family and Friends --- we have to stand back, remain tight lipped and one day perhaps they will learn something from being around dogs that actually behave (atleast when we have visitors).

We all had to start somewhere... before, there were no boards. now people come here and ask questions. No tragedy..so what everybody has to start somewhere.. some of us are lucky to be intorduced early. SOme dont know of the sport of Schutzhund until their 40ties.  Let them come and ask, rather than not ask at all....

I have titled 1dog to ZVV3---
Many to SVV1
SchH3
FH2
shit load of BHs

and I am still a novice.. you should ask people who know me! LOL

Dogshome, thanks very, very n very much. . . .some persons think puppies or dogs to be cars, that you buy, park in your carrage day-in-day out till you're prepared to drive-out. Even cars need care, checks, water, oil n "where not to drive to". Some person should only be allowed to admire pets and not keep any living thing, not even themselves.

I'm not a breeder but from what I understand good breeders interview the family and decide to sell or not sell.  The breeder takes more of the responsibility, I believe, in the initial purchase or selling decision.

GSDPACK,

I am not saying that we should not allow novices to purchase our puppies (we all had to start somewhere) BUT I must admit that when folks ring about my puppies I am MORE than happy when they tell me that they have previously owned a German Shepherd.

I think some of these folks wake up one morning and say Hey lets go out today and buy a German Shepherd   without even giving any consideration as to whether the breed is the right dog for them ~~~~ and really do we need for these people to give the breed a bad name?
We already have so much legislation councils always looking for a reason to lock up another dog that looks sideways at someone. Here in Oz state of Victoria the Canine Council almost brought in a new law stating that GSDs with German working Sch titles were to be muzzled when out in public .

When I first started  looking for a German Shepherd puppy I went to shows, read books and spoke to owners of dogs and bitches I liked, asked lots of questions saw puppies that they produce, joined clubs. Eventually I found a breeder to work with whose dogs I liked and then waited 18 months until she had a puppy for me.
That puppy is in my avitar with her granddaughter, she is now 10 years old and a fantastic dog and no she was not an easy girl to work with, gave me a really hard time as a puppy, mouthing (I still have the scars to prove it), barking and she would rather play with a tennis ball than listen to me but that tennis ball was a fantastic training tool.

All true. I just made someone leave my house w/out his puppy because this was his first visit. I said "we do not buy puppies as if they are sweaters. Sleep on it, talk to your family, and make sure this is what you want."

He's excited as hell, I've sent him a whole bunch of reading material, and he's coming back Monday, after having read what I gave him and will be quizzing him on;-)

He also said I'm the most honest breeder he's spoken to; everyone else said their dogs were perfect. LOL! I don't see how you can sell puppies like that in good conscience.

See, that is not a doable statement for a wannabe pet owner, and you do have to know how to deal with us.
