I am just helping to spread the word that a MSP dog is missing, and the handler has started a Facebook page called "Find Bane".  As you can imagine, everyone from the State Police Post to strangers in other states are heartbroken.  Thanks for reading, you never know if someone in a very unexpected place would hear or see something, this happened just before firearm deer season began.  Thanks for looking, and please, if you can, spread the word.

I hope they find him.  How sad he has gone missing.  Wonder if they found the missing man too.  Curious.

Unfortunately, the invidual being tracked had been missing since August, and his remains were found and returned to his family.

Bane is still missing, and to date there have been no confirmed sightings. :(

Don't give up! We had a similar case here back around I want to say 2000 in the forest of Greenwater in Washington state. His name was Faro. It was a foot pursuit where the K9 was released into the woods for a suspect.  The dog went missing for over a month we searched many weeks and weekends. On one search I was on I did hear a dog bark from somewhere deep in the woods far away but with the hills could not pinpoint the exact area it came from. Very dense forest and logging roads. The dog finally came out I think about a month later... nobody ever gave up looking and going up there and calling for him. He was emaciated but survived and was returned to his handler recovered and eventually went back on patrol. Sadly he was struck by a car in a pursuit the next year and killed. It was tragic... that dog was a hero. But don't give up on this boy keep searching and calling for him. They are truly lost in those woods and cover several miles a day trying to get out which can only set them in deeper into the woods. It is heartbreaking to know he is out there and trying to get back, hungry and cold.  Please keep us posted and I hope he is found soon.

A GPS collar would have prevented the loss of this valuable dog.  They will be fortunate to find him in this cold.

Judy, believe me when I tell you that everyone here in the area is wishing the dog had been wearing a GPS collar as well, but frankly most departmental budgets are stretched so thin already that just retaining any K9 team they already have is always being debated...  The community where this dog and handler are stationed has come together to help find this dog, and have donated to a reward fund that continues to rise, and many of those contributors have pledged to help fund the purchase of GPS collars for this dog and the other MI State Police teams.

That said, GPS collars have a seriously limited range, and that range is further shortened by hilly terrain and impenetrable obstacles that interfere with signal transmission, so even if Bane had been wearing a GPS collar, there's a good chance we'd still be looking for him anyway.

Edited to add:  The weather shouldn't be much of an issue for the dog; there's good cover in the area, plenty of clean water sources, and with firearms deer season having started on 11/15, the piles of nourishing deer entrails will be plentiful, too.  As long as he doesn't get hit trying to cross a road, or shot for running deer or livestock, he should turn up eventually.

Could someone with experience recovering working dogs who have been lost in the field please offer some advice to these people. In three days (end of deer season) there are a great many with varing degrees of experience people searching the woods for Bane. It is their nature and it will happen.

Thank you for the encouraging story, Judy, hexe, you are well versed on this story, too. Thanks.

The dog's trail is probably too cold by now, but has anyone tried tracking the dog with a dog that is trained to find dogs? There are search dogs that are very good at this.

Also, I would call people in isolated areas who may not have heard of this. Someone in the boonies may have taken him in without any idea of who he is.

From what I've read on Banes FB page, they did use tracking dogs right when it happened.
I am holding hope that he will turn up.  I think someone found him and is keeping him, too.   Internet access around there is probably limited or people aren't up on the news of a lost K9.
