Just got back from the vet today and I asked about putting my dog on a raw diet.  The vet told me that it is a bad idea.  Any input from anyone that uses the raw diet.

Your vet is right you should not feed raw diet to fake dogs...it may just stink up the house....

K9topnotch,
For certain situations, the advice you get from vets are not always the best.....This happens to be one of them....Unless, he is saying that for your dog's specific situation for a specific reason, I believe an owner is the best person to decide what is best for his dog....It does no good to feed a certain food because everyone else thinks its great.....Your dog may not do good at all on it.  You can get a pretty good range of opinions on what people think is best going by what THEIR dog does on the food.  There will many here that can tell you what they consider good and not good and what effects certain foods may have.....Consider all of them......But you will not know for sure until you actually see for yourself, what food your dog does best on, regardless if it is raw, partial raw, or hard dogfood......

Did you get specific as to what you were actually going to feed, amounts, supplements, etc?

feeding raw isn't as easy as just throwing a chunk of flesh to your dog.

dogs need the proper ratio of protein, carbohydrates, minerals, fiber and vitamins. if their diet is out of whack long term their health will be effected.

as for me, it didn't work. i tired it for 10 days and my pack was sick with the squirts the whole time. once we went back on regular food they got better.

To me, it's like having 'domestic fowl or chicken meat and asking for 'wild goose meat' or having domestic goat meat or beef and asking for 'wild moose meat'. Considering 'time/preparation', how could i ever ask of 'raw' when i have 'ready made' nutritious kibble for my dog. . , .go to d north or south polar regions n start looking for refridgeration.

Whose dog were you asking about? Mine? Vickie's? Melba's? Richard Clark's?

Ask your vet who paid his/her last continuing education (if your vet did any) or who sent him that nice free gift recently ....I bet it was either Procter & Gamble or Hills Pet Nutrition....the big pet food producers....of course vets are loyal to get their next free continueing education or that extra machine they always wanted...

Exactly, dog food company's pay vets same way medical industry pays human Dr's. It is about profit.  That is the reason I cant find a vet. You would like the vets are all about animals but many are just walking books that get paid very well. I am careful about who I ask or take opionions from. I like to consider motivation.  I switched my 8yr old beagle and 1 yr. old GSD to raw. My beagle has always been athletic but this is different. At her age she is jumping anything she can just because she feels better physically. I dont brush her teeth so they were not picture perfect to say the least. The raw bones have totally whitened her teeth. Breath does not stink. Stool is very small compared to prev. Just the visual affects I see in her are amazing. And I dont mind spending alot on dog food and this is the best results I have had with her and I have had her since 8 weeks old.
