Conditioning is important for any athlete, that includes our dogs.. in addition to being accustomed to proper ring training.... biking, hill work, sprints and swimming are all great exercises.... Keep in mind that they should be trained gradually and carefully just like we would train ourselves.... You may want to consult with a sports vet.. there are many very good vets who specialize in sport dog conditioning.. are you in the USA?? What part??

I have friends in Germany(Bavaria) that do a lot of hill work. Their dogs are in awesome condition and look supurb. Here in central Arkansas, there are no hills, so I take my gang out on a 1.7 mile run every day. I ride the bike and they run along beside me. They don't have the big muscled look, but are well conditioned.

Hi, No I do not live in America though I am an american. I live in Romania. I love excersising my dogs. I do it gradually till i feel they are fit enough and never try to over excersise them. I am now getting them in to top condition. And i usually take them for about a 3 hour bike ride every day but due to an accident can't really ride my bike for that lond so I have been taking them to a place near my house where there is a really steep and long hill and throw the ball up and down the hill about 20 times I now have been throwing it one time more every day to increase the effort but was wondering if there are anymore tips on getting them fit. They look great but I know they could be better. So any more Ideas would be super. Thanks Jess

We condition our sleddogs by having them pull tires working their way up to heavier items loaded on a sledge. Of course you would need to buy a well fitted harness from a northern dog outfitter. If you're interested, google Nordkyn, they sell some wonderful supplies. GSD's will do this sort of work, they like to pull and there have been teams of GSD's that do well in competitive short distance sleddog races.

BTW if you are interested in trying this with your dog, you will need a harness designed for weight pulling, not racing.

Jess There is a supplement just for dogs that works extremely well for muscle toning and muscle growth. It's called Vertex. Dogs love the taste too. It's used widely in Germany by most of the top show dogs as Power Plus. Call Naturmix,,800-825-1669 they sell it. good luck

I should have said in my post - Vertex or other supplement won't build muscles and strength/fitness just by feeding it - the dog must of course have conditioning exercise and fitness/muscle building routine, plus proper nutrition, good-quality meat-based dog food. I like to swim my dogs 3 seasons, bike them whenever possible in the winter - also ball-throws up/down hills is good, or long trots (bike or horseback for me). I like long swims best for conditioning lean muscle strength.

Training GSD`s has to be varied to obtain best results.  i expect this is true of all breeds, and a varied amouint of swimming, weight-pulling - biking - FREE RUNNING and PLAYING (very important) should do the job with a healthy dog.

Good food - and total enjoyment of what the dog is doing are the key elements,
