Just wondering if anybody had tips or good ways to keep track of their dogs' progeny.  What I mean is to keep track of the strengths and weaknesses of the pups in the litter and to use that information to see what areas turned out good and what areas need improvement.  I have been just jotting things in a notebook but I was wondering if anybody had any better ways to keep track of this information.

Keep them until they're a year old.

LOL

Make sure they go to homes who are qualified to judge and get honest feedback regularly, throughout different ages/stages. Other than that, seriously, keeping them is about it.

The breeder my pup came from has a yahoo group "puplist" for updates, etc.  It is a very good source of support and we have  photo albums of our dogs so we can share their brags and accomplishments. I loved being able to keep in touch with the littermates progress.  A few don't participate in the discussions, but there are updated pics at least!  The breeder also keeps each litter referenced on their (not the yahoogroup)website and updates it often.

Well when you get those updates or see the pups in person, what do you do with that information.  Do you write things down somewhere or just keep it in mind?

I just remember it. But I'm a freak and it's all I think about most of the time, lol. I'm always playing out "what if " combos in my head to try to come up w/my ideal and analyzing (and over-analyzing) previous pups' behavior to assess strengths, possible weaknesses, etc.  I don't breed a lot; if you breed a lot, it would be harder.

I do keep a journal, bad memory.

I also keep a journal and encourage all of my puppy buyers to stay in touch. Most do simply because they love to hear about their puppies family members as well.
