Heartbreaking. How devastating for her owners. How can someone make such a mistake?. My heart goes out to her owners. What they must be going through must be terrible. So heartbreaking. Such a special dog. This should never have happened.

Heartbreaking and sickening. What a stupid mistake. They killed a war hero, the dog managed to avoid being killed on purpose by the enemy only to be unable to avoid being killed by stupidity.

How sad that the dog survived terrorists in Afghanistan only to be killed here by an incompetent shelter employee.
The worst of it is that it probably wouldn't have happened if the dog had been microchipped. Shelters routinely scan dogs for chips upon admission, and the owners of chipped dogs are notified. It's not foolproof, but it does increase the dog's chances of making it out of a shelter alive.

That is terrible! Unfortunately things like that happen all the time. I've heard about it happeneing at a local veterinary office too, where people brought in a pet to be euthanized and didn't want to stay so the dog was put in a cage until later and the wrong dog was euthanized later.

No, it says the dog wasn't chipped or licensed, it says nothing about the dog not having ID tags, which I think it must have been wearing in order for the shelter to contact the owner and tell them about how they killed their dog by mistake. The shelter admits the idiot worker did not follow proper procedure, I doubt having a chip would have made a difference. By the way, the scanners don't always read the chips, and not because they migrate. My friends dog is chipped not tattooed and she has the hardest time getting scanners to read her chip at every trial. The chip is right there where it's supposed to be, and this is a dog we KNOW is chipped, I can imagine how well the cursory shelter wave would work for my friends chipped dog should it be lost or stolen.

How heartbreaking! OMG! How can someone be so incredibly stupid? A war hero put down because someone hired a brainless idiot to work at the shelter. It should go higher up than just the nitwit that put the dog down. This is unbearably sad news. The poor family! I'm so angry I could chew nails and spit tacs!

Probably not just a shelter "worker" who made such a serious "mistake" - who does the euthanasias at most shelters - all shelters I know of - the resident or visiting veterinarian, or the humane officer or animal control officer, or one of the "higher up" employees...... I can't imagine who would WANT to choose to kill a dog that had only been there 2 days, may have been wearing tags, had not been there long enough for even minimal "keep until they are sure it's not claimed by the owner" - and was obviously well cared for..... I'm furious that this could happen to ANYONE'S lost pet - having this one beat the odds in Afghanistan and being one of the lucky few dogs that escaped that country.... how incredibly heartbreaking.
I do hope that no matter how "sorry" they are, the owners press charges against the facility for NEGLIGENCE at the cost of their dogs' life.

If this had been my dog, you all would see me on the evening news, handcuffed.

It is sad, very sad and we get it in the news nation wide and when I am thinking about it I feel like I have a hot boulder in my stomach.
However "mistakes" ( I call it inexcusable negligence) like that happen all the time and it happened to my neighbor almost exactly same way with his two dogs. His dogs had tags with the county. It was no national news and as far as I know all they got was" Ups,....Sorry". Their dogs were not heroes from Afghanistan, but they loved their dogs too never less.
