Maybe in the heart of the German shepherd, they have more to teach then we ever may know.

When one chooses to co exist with these gallant troubadour's, It takes one down a path in life you would never travel with anything else. Oh' the things he will teach over the span of his life....then maybe just maybe, you notice, you hear his heart beat, It beats with every breath you take, for your life is no longer your own it is his. He will introduce you to people and happenings, places, and relationships that can last a lifetime

Him and his gentle giant nature, or the power house female lends as an attentive mother that can stand alone or create this collective of new pups that are all celebrated with new puppy breath. One has to admit, how many times you have laughed at your own litter. Only innocence such as children and animals can make the most educated person, sound like a babbling child, or look like fools.

You find him locked into your heart…. Into your life.
Oh’ he is there when you get married. He is sure this new person will sleep on the floor and not in his spot on the bed. Oh’ he is there sharing your life while raising your family, an you noticed after you gave birth to 2 or 3 of your own children, you are counting 3 or 4 meals being made, Some on the floor, some at the table. You find yourself, yelling at the whole house, kids, spouses and dogs, “wipe your feet"., stop clowning, or who caused this mess! Or you hear you love that dog sometimes more then you do me…..and under your breath come a simple…..yep, he is housebroken.

You wake up and find they are part of your family, not just the family dog. Oh' he is there, while the kids are growing up, you still own what he chewed as a puppy, one shoe, and most of the rest is your furniture He is there when someone tried to break into your house, he gave you that extra second that made the difference for you and your family. Oh' he is there when your parents pass away, he helps you say the goodbye, and you both now show that bit of gray. Oh' he is there when the kids go off to college, and empty nest sets in, he keeps you moving cause someone still has to pee the dog. Oh’ he is there during the divorce, or when you found out you had breast cancer. Oh' he is there, when your heart hurts because you are losing the house or your husband is laid off. Oh' he is there for all men or women's pain, you held his heart, and may never know you did.

Oh' he is there, now when it is just you and him, and everyone has come to know him more then they know you. You realize you are his Seeing Eye human, and your own eyes are not much better. He still wants those walks or a bite on the sleeve. How about those drives in the truck, or going to the vet, he takes it, like he is Elvis, every young girl in the office swoons, and you know when he has left the building.

Oh' he was there, and he lent his teachings to your life of his kindness and unconditional love. He would have died for you, if he needed to, or you asked it of him. He affirmed your understandings of good character could not be taught. For you to deal with him must you be fair, being true, forthright, firm and with respect, because that is how he dealt with you.

The final beat of his strong heart, really only beat for you, you listen for,… for the last time, it beats with your breathing. This Gallant Troubadour has gone home, and he waits for you, and you somehow know he never really left you. . And Oh' he is there. In his life, there is and was more. Maybe just maybe, on that walk or drive you hear his heart beat.

What a great post!!!!! This brought tears to my eyes as it told the story of my best girl....The one that was there when my husband fell back onto a 55gal aquarium and passed his arm through it...She was there at my side while I panicked, and tried to  wrap a phone cord around his arm to stop the bleeding that was like water coming out of a faucet. It saved his life....She was there to jump in bed and wake me at 3:00am when my 3mos baby girl had stopped breathing. We rushed her to the hospital just in time to save her life. She was later diagnosed with SIDS...She saved by child's life by waking me up and running to the baby bed... She was there, through the heartaches and sadness of divorce, and death... She was there at my side through it all.....

Until a precious gift such as this comes into a person's life, they have no idea the true meaning of a best friend and unconditional love....

This is a very touching piece, Azure Blue...

Thanks for this thought.  I, too, found my eyes swimming with tears when I read this, and it's true.  Our dogs are truly our best friends, when we find the right ones.  They can be as close to a soul mate as any creature can ever become, and our world is made better for their having been here.

I have not been on here in a while and and you have me crying. These are tears for all of the dogs we have sent to rainbow bridge and for all of those who will never understand the heart of the GSD.

LOL! What are you feeding him? He's there when you're shacking up with the hubby and sstill there when your kids go to college? He's a wonder dog! BTW, it's than, not then. Oh, I know, I know! I don't want all you sobbing women to lynch me. Funny though. Mine stayed with Mrs. Corleone through the split.
