Hi to all. About 3-1/2 weeks ago I answered an ad about a "Free" purebred German Shepherd Dog that was posted on craigslist. Well, thru a phone call and a visit I went to see the dog. Awesome female two years old gsd. I have had her for about the last 3-1/2 weeks now. I sent the college boy a email to let him know how the dog is getting alone. No response. Now in the mean time I have gotten rather attached to this dog. I ahve started teaching her to play ball and frisbee as well as teaching her some basics of scent tracking.

Guess what ; Out of nowhere I got an email from the guy this am saying he wants the dog back cause he MISSES her. I say BS.  Any ideas or thoughts on this ???? I thought once you give a dog up that is it ? Thing is he got the dog from a local shelter and the dog is still registered to him.  What should I do ????

You don't have to fight to keep the dog, a deal is a deal.
Not sure why you didn't get the papers in your deal but that must not have been a factor.
I'd say it's totally up to you, but I wouldn't return the dog without being compensated for my time and trouble.
Does the guy want the dog back, or did he find a cash buyer somewhere?
People make such messes and the dog suffers.

Many shelters require you give the dog back to them if you no longer want it. Was it  Oprah or Ellen DeGeneres who adopted a dog then gave it to a friend. She got in trouble and had to give the dog back.

That was Ellen.  Maybe the guy is in the same situation.  If the shelter found out he gave the dog away they would be unhappy if he signed some kind of contract that he would return the dog to them.  I would suggest you find out what the laws are about it in your area, contact the shelter and ask them if you were to adopt an animal from them and wanted to give it to someone else, what would you need to do etc.  Find out all that you can and then fight to keep your dog!  I don't think the shelters are that picky about who ends up with the dog as long as it doesn't come back to them.  It's other rescue organizations that come unglued if you do that.  Good luck in your battle with the idiot!

Going off what DebiSue said you're in a sticky situation if the dog is still registered with all the legal authorities to this guy then by law the dog still belongs to him.

We always have a letter written by the owner at the time they give the dog up stating they are relinquishing ownership rights and in no way shape or form able to take the dog back once we have it. This is for dogs that we put into service for PDs occasionally. It doesn't happen often but we make sure to cover our behinds for just this situation.

If you have the emails where he said he would give you the dog or when to pick up etc.. then that should be enough to prove (if he should try and take you to court or show up with an officer) that he no longer wanted the dog and gave the dog to you. You need some sort of witness or paper trail.

Too bad, too sad for him. He relinquished his rights when he gave the dog up. I'd find the craigslist ad and print it if you haven't already. Print any emails correspondence you had with him. Keep the email that he sent saying he wants the dog back (proves that he gave the dog up to begin with). I'm guessing you didn't get anything in writing. Typical kid, I bet one of his parents contacts you next.
Good luck,
Annette

I wonder if it is his parents that pushed him to give her away, since he is gone off to college?
I don't think he'll push you on it.  Tell him, sorry, nope.  You like her and you are keeping her.  It's best that he wait till he is done college and settled before he gets his next dog anyway.
