Can a dog be allergic to raw chicken?
The reason I ask is that someone has introduced raw chicken wings to their adult dog's Complete dry diet, with either the idea to change completely to a raw diet, or just add the chicken wings as well.
However, their dog as started to itch, and I wondered if anyone has known a GSD to be allergic in this way, (or even if the combination of the Complete food PLUS the raw chicken have created this problem)?
Thanks,
Vixen

protien allergies exist, however has she ruled out other possibilities first, for example if the carpet had been recently shampoo'd or powdered. Especially if the dog has tolerated cooked forms of chicken without a problem.
Also ask your friend if she can find out the source of the chicken and how was it processed? It could be an additive rather than the chicken itself. has the chicken been treated/packaged in a solution?
If anything she could try using turkey instead of chicken but if the allergies persist I would definitely look for other culprits.
As with people usually the less additives the better.

I had a GSD that had numerous Protein allergies the raw form caused a quicker reaction than cooked, order of severe adverse reactions in order of worst first:
Turkey, Chicken, various White Fish, Lamb, Sheep, Venison, he also had an intollerence to Beef and was allergic to Dust Mites.

Makes intuitve sense wildmoor as cooking breaks down food to a certain extent. Raw forms could cause a faster/more intense reaction than cooked forms, However don't believe (or at least I have never witnessed/heard of) that one can be allergic to one and not the other.
I'm sorry your dog had so many allergies... did you try bison or goat? Do you mind If i ask what you ended up feeding your dog? And how you found out that your dog had allergies to all of these?
Was it an intradermal skin test, RAST, or ELIZA? Or was it trial and error? Not criticizing in anyway just genuinely curious.
Thanks

When I give Hero raw anything, he itches, gets the squirts and barfs too. He's now on Orijen Regional Red and Adult (chicken) and doing well. Some dogs just don't to well on raw diets. It took a whole lot of trial and error to find a food he can tolerate.

Thank you all very much - Interesting SitasMom about your dog reacting badly to raw food. Not something that you would expect from a dog with raw food is it? But I do wonder if this might be a similar situation, as it does seem to be linked.

Maybe the allergies aren't just about being raw, but something else that dissapates with heat or cooking. Additives, chemicals, hormones, that type of thing.

Vixen,
For more possible suggestions and alot more info try the yahoo raw feeding group. It has almost 20,000 members many of which have been raw feeding multiple animals for years and have all sorts of experiences that could be relevant to your friend. Good luck

Beetree, You are right, Allergies are SO frustrating, as it can sometimes be so difficult to discover the source! However, this dog is only slightly itching, and from the information I have the raw chicken wings were the most recent change. So hopefully they will try stopping them, giving him a good bath too, and then see if things improve.
