Sorry for double post.  I thought I had added this to the general topic section Brenna first barks in training.  She will be 11 months old end of this month.  She is not on sleeve yet.  In the beginning we were waiting for the bite pillow. />

This is the first time she's barked during training?  Looks like she's been doing it for a while!  Either way, looks like she's coming along nicely.  Not to detract from her progress but this is why I like imprinting pups from a young age...you can usually have them barking at a few months and it'll only intensify after that.

Hi Keith:

Yes, we had a whine or 1 puppy bark about 3 weeks ago, but no real bark until Sunday.

Thank you!  I am looking forward to training her and seeing what we can achieve together!

Keith:

My trainer said she's higher in defense than prey...so getting her to work in prey took some time. I brought her out 2 or 3 times since she was 6 mos to see if she was ready, but she was rather dis-interested. She showed alot of drive at home (she was a handful) so I was not sure what to make of it..

Between 6-9 mos my trainer said no rush just let her mature, just keep socializing and drive building on your own. About 9 mos she showed interest in participating but didn't bark, so began bringing her out about once a week...this video is about a month after we "started"...she will be 11 mos at the end of Nov. He said if he wanted to he could have gotten her to bark sooner in defense but until she matures he wants her to bark in prey.

I don't really have a firm grasp on understanding prey/defense so am trying to learn as much as I can.

Any comments are appreciated as I really am trying to learn more.  My first dog I trained to SchI is a german show line and all prey, so Brenna has been very different.

Good for him for having recognized this and taken the time to encourage her rather than pushing her too hard too fast and deciding she wasn't up to it when she wasn't yet mature enough to handle the stress of being pushed into defense.   Working the dog in both prey and eventually defense are both important but working in prey lets her have fun and gives you a way to relieve the stress that will inevitably come with putting pressure on her when she's ready for it.  I could write more but am in sort of a time crunch right now...hopefully, some others will add to my comments or you might try starting a new topic with prey vs. defense drive in the subject and solicit comments about what both are and how they're used in training.  You should get plenty of input and it would be a very beneficial topic for the board in general.

Renofan,
Brenna will probably be slow to mature from what I see. (I have a half-brother to your dog)
She will probably be defensive. It is in the bloodlines. Make sure that you and your helper are up to the task because you will eventually have a dog on your hands that will bite for real if pushed.
Don't worry about her immaturity. Enjoy her this way while you can. Take your time with her. Make sure that your helper is as committed to your dog as you are. Things will start to really kick in to gear at 1-1/2 to 2 years old. At 3 years old you should know what you have. You will be amazed at the difference you will see in your dog. Be patient and do not do any formal obedience with the dog right now.
If you want a little more insight in to what you have please pm me and leave an email address if you want.
I can explain some things to you and you can pass them on to your helper also.
Have a great day!
